Element inom projekt kring <strong>aktivt</strong> <strong>medborgarskap</strong> och livslångt lärande, samt kriterier<br />

<strong>för</strong> goda exempel (best practice) enligt Learning for active citizenship: a signifi cant challenge<br />

in building a Europe of knowledge 93 .<br />

Projects seeking to make a contribution to learning for citizenship included some of the following<br />

elements of content:<br />

• explicit emphasis on human dignity and human rights as fundamental values<br />

• knowledge and experience of democratic institutions and decision-making<br />

• critical appraisal of the media<br />

• skills to combat social marginalisation/exclusion<br />

• sense of belonging at different levels of community (local, national, European)<br />

and of solidarity and responsibility towards one’s communities<br />

• understanding of the processes leading to prejudice and discrimination against<br />

minorities and the ‘different’<br />

• developing intercultural experiences and skills<br />

• application of environmental values and sustainable development<br />

Elements of good practice for projects<br />

• The area studies broadly conclude that effective projects are those which<br />

• incorporate multidimensional aspects of active citizenship (cultural, economic,<br />

political and social);<br />

• use innovative and participatory teaching and learning methods which combine<br />

cognitive, affective and pragmatic levels in a judicious and balanced way;<br />

• place a commitment to core European values at the centre of their concerns (democratic<br />

culture, humanitarianism and social justice, respect and tolerance for diversity<br />

and difference, ...);<br />

• and balance self-direction with professional guidance and supervision
