However, the national academic collaboration of AASS is not restricted
to Robotdalen. They are the coordinator of the industrial graduate school
RAP (incorporating four universities, two of which do not participate in
Robotdalen) and actively participate in a joint research platform in
Information Technology with Högskolan Halmstad and Högskolan Skövde.
This demonstrates a clear ambition and success to expand their national
academic network.
AASS has the scientific potential to become a leading national research
centre in robotics. However, they would need to ride the political waves in
order to become accepted as such; some of the larger universities may not
like the idea.
3.2 International relationships
The international relationships and networks are less clear than the ones on
national level. Most of the research group leaders are well-known, with
good to excellent international contacts in their respective research areas,
but when it comes to robotics as a whole, currently AASS is not yet visible
as the leading Swedish research centre in robotics, though in areas such as
field and service robotics they seem to be the national leader. It is, however,
important that work is continued to further boost the international visibility
of this profile.
Whilst the research effort and quality is significant, the corresponding
potential visibility is not yet there. This visibility of AASS as a leading
research centre in robotics could (and should) be improved. AASS is
participating in a number of FP6 and FP7 projects and this should result in a
higher visibility. However, it is important that they create visibility as a
leading robotics research centre as AASS as a whole. Some large institutes
of technology in Sweden may not completely like this, but this profiling is
important for AASS. The good connections that the individual research
leaders and groups have should thus be used to increase visibility of AASS.
AASS should strive for participating in FP7 projects and other international
collaborations in which AASS can contribute and thus market themselves as
a whole.
3.4 Management of threats and possibilities
After the establishment of Robotdalen, AASS has been gradually expanding
their national academic network (which also brings in additional industrial
contacts) and at a later stage, their international academic network.
