Špela KALČIĆ<strong>in</strong> temporary jobs <strong>in</strong> agriculture, construction and tourism spend the warm summer months <strong>in</strong> Europeand beg<strong>in</strong> their journeys towards Africa and south along the Atlantic coast of Morocco and the WesternSahara <strong>in</strong> the late autumn, when the European climate gets colder. Those who engage <strong>in</strong> petty commerce,second-hand trade of vehicles and domestic appliances literally live on the road and circulatewith a more or less <strong>in</strong>tensive frequency between the European and African cont<strong>in</strong>ents all year long. Onthe other extreme are those who stop <strong>in</strong> one place for extended periods and use their vehicles for hous<strong>in</strong>gand for mov<strong>in</strong>g between their w<strong>in</strong>ter and summer camps. Those whose <strong>in</strong>come is not attached toseasonal work <strong>in</strong> agriculture and tourism-related services often extend their journeys to various localities<strong>in</strong> Sub-Saharan Africa, and travel towards South and East Africa and also to other cont<strong>in</strong>ents. Thereis always the possibility of board<strong>in</strong>g a boat to South America either from South Africa or Senegal. At themoment Brazil seems to be a popular dest<strong>in</strong>ation, but there are many who prefer Asia and take a flightto India, Thailand or Bali once they have arrived at their chosen African dest<strong>in</strong>ation. 9 Peripatetic housetruckers’travel routes are not fixed. They are often outcomes of spontaneous decision mak<strong>in</strong>g. Dest<strong>in</strong>ationskeep chang<strong>in</strong>g along the travel trajectory, largely depend<strong>in</strong>g on the social, political, economicand climatic conditions <strong>in</strong> the localities traversed. However, the freedom of this spontaneity lies <strong>in</strong> thedoma<strong>in</strong> of restrictions, and many peripatetic housetruckers without regular <strong>in</strong>come or sav<strong>in</strong>gs are alsodirected <strong>in</strong> their movement by pursuit of <strong>in</strong>come as well as friends’ connections.Peripatetics have left ma<strong>in</strong>stream sedentary life while still of work<strong>in</strong>g age, so they engage <strong>in</strong> variousflexible and mobile economic strategies. It is very <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g that many Europeans that I have met <strong>in</strong>West Africa engage <strong>in</strong> practically the same unregulated economic niches as many Africans with Europeanpassports (Juntunen 2002; Kohl 2009). While <strong>in</strong> Europe they usually work <strong>in</strong> tourism related servicesand construction sites, and dur<strong>in</strong>g the harvest season <strong>in</strong> agriculture pick<strong>in</strong>g fruits and grapes. Theyexport second-hand vehicles and domestic appliances to Africa as well as other second-hand goods.Those who sell vehicles always make sure to stuff them with other goods that can be sold at a profit onthe way to one of the West African vehicle markets such as “No man’s land”, i.e. the border zone betweenMorocco and Mauritania, Nouakchott <strong>in</strong> Mauritania, Bamako <strong>in</strong> Mali, Bobo Dioulasso <strong>in</strong> Burk<strong>in</strong>a Fasoor Niamey <strong>in</strong> Niger. Interest<strong>in</strong>gly they often report discover<strong>in</strong>g suitable market items by observ<strong>in</strong>g theAfrican traders circulat<strong>in</strong>g between the cont<strong>in</strong>ents. Many rely entirely on import<strong>in</strong>g vehicles, mak<strong>in</strong>g upto seven annual trips between Europe and Africa. And what do these car dealers br<strong>in</strong>g back “home”?Travell<strong>in</strong>g back empty-handed would be economically speak<strong>in</strong>g quite lame. Therefore most of them<strong>in</strong>vest some money <strong>in</strong>to purchas<strong>in</strong>g jewellery that can be sold at stalls dur<strong>in</strong>g the summer <strong>in</strong> touristplaces, at music festivals and various other fairs across Europe. However, this k<strong>in</strong>d of suitcase trade isnot conf<strong>in</strong>ed only to travel between Europe and Africa. Many travel to Asia to purchase clothes, which ismuch cheaper then Africa <strong>in</strong> terms of prices.However, not all peripatetic housetruckers are such talented traders as those described above.Many are not at all <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> trade. All they want is to have enough to live on and to do someth<strong>in</strong>gmean<strong>in</strong>gful. Many of them live partly on state benefits, such as assistance for disabled people, child supplements,unemployment money, social support etc. They often state that they come to Africa to livecheap for a while, save some money, and to repair their mobile homes; spend<strong>in</strong>g €6000 or €600 to pa<strong>in</strong>ttheir mobile home makes quite a big difference for a young couple who spend no more than €500 permonth. Economiz<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>in</strong> general the prevail<strong>in</strong>g method of “mak<strong>in</strong>g” money. Some of those who ownbetter vehicles run overland tour<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>esses, which are usually organised via the <strong>in</strong>ternet. It seemsthat new <strong>in</strong>formation and communication as well as navigation technologies have enabled many towork at a distance. Some peripatetics are privileged enough to earn their money accord<strong>in</strong>g to Western9 As already mentioned, many housetruckers use their vehicles only for hous<strong>in</strong>g while they travel as backpackersand are thus not conf<strong>in</strong>ed only to housetruck transportation. Some among them switch between backpack<strong>in</strong>gand housetruck<strong>in</strong>g, depend<strong>in</strong>g on their dest<strong>in</strong>ation. Thus they often fly between cont<strong>in</strong>ents while comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gtheir travel with different k<strong>in</strong>ds of transport.108
