Pharmacy
All medicines and all dressing materials are available in pharmacies.
There are those available on prescription only and there
are also over-the-counter medicines, such as nasal sprays or headache
tablets. Ask for advice and take those offered at the lowest
price for comparable products.
• With a doctor's prescription you get your medicines free of
charge from the pharmacy. However, usually you will have to
pay an additional fee amounting to € 5.- - € 10.-. So - ask for
a comparable medicine for which co-payment is not required.
C
hildren in Germany are obliged to attend
school – this applies also to foreign children.
For the sake of a good and fast integration,
it is important that children and young
people start to attend a day-care centre
(Kita) or school immediately after their arrival in Germany.
Parents must ensure that their children go there.
Since February 2016, the electronic health card can be handed out
from each of a large number of statutory health insurance companies
in Germany. You decide which statutory health insurance company
you want to be insured with.
If you receive Citizen´s Allowance, you file an application at the Job
Centre for the health card, the “Befreiungsausweis” (= “Exemption
certificate”) and for co-payments for medication. The card will be
sent to your home by mail.
If you can earn your livelihood from your own income or assets,
you are not entitled to Citizen's allowance. In this case, refugees
from Ukraine nevertheless are entitled to become members of a
health insurance company. They submit an application for voluntary
member-ship directly at the health insurance company. The right to
become a membership must be exercised within six months after
arrival.
At first the health card is valid for two years and is based on your
right of residence.
The health card you present to a dentist or physician, as the case
may be, or to a hospital; you do not need a certificate from the Social
Security Office. Normally people first consult a general practitioner
who - if necessary – will refer them to a medical specialist. A
dentist can be contacted directly.
Preparing for the consultation of a
dentist or a general practitioner
When you want to consult a dentist or a general practitioner you
should be prepared to describe exactly your health troubles (what
kind of, when, under what circumstances) informing about previous
medical reports/ laboratory test results and to show the list of medicines
you have to take (application, intolerances).
• Doctors and members of the practice staff are bound by professional
secrecy and are not allowed to pass on your personal data to
third parties. So - you can speak frankly with the dentist/ general
physician about everything that could be related to your health condition
and might be important to him/her to know.
• After the consultation of the dentist/ general practitioner you
should understand what disease you are suffering from, whether it
is contagious, whether there can be complications and what the risks
of medical treatment might be.
• If you have very little or no knowledge at all of the German language,
it is advisable to have a person keeping company with you and
assisting you when you receive medical treatment by the dentist/
general practitioner.
• Pharmacies are open mainly from Monday - Friday from 9
o´clock a.m. to 6 o´clock p.m. and on Saturday until noon.
• At night and on weekends, there is always another pharmacy
on stand-by duty. You can find the name and address of the nearest
pharmacy on stand-by duty on the pharmacy door, in your
local newspaper or on the internet – enter “Notfallapotheke” (=
”Pharmacy on stand-by duty”) and location. Usually a one-off
additional emergency fee is due (of € 2.50.-).
Pregnancy, maternity legislation and
children´s allowance
• If you are expecting a child, the “ Schwangerschaftsberatung” (=
“Pregnancy Advisory Service”) can help and support you before
and during the pregnancy in all medical, legal and social respects.
• If you are considering abortion, the “Schwangerschaftskonfliktberatung”
(= “Pregnancy Conflict Counseling Service”) will
advise you. This counseling before an abortion is mandatory;
abortion is legally permitted only during the first 12 weeks after
fertilization.
• The “Bundesstiftung “Mutter und Kind” (= “Federal Foundation
“Mother and Child”) helps pregnant women in emergency
situations by providing mostly one-off financial support to
help to bear the costs incurred by pregnancy and birth – this in
combination with personal counseling. The application must be
filed before the birth of the child and submitted at a “Schwangerschaftsberatungsstelle”
(= “Pregnancy Counseling Centre”)
• During pregnancy and after birth, you are entitled to assistance
and care provided by a midwife or a doctor. The expenses will be
paid. Gainfully employed pregnant women enjoy maternity protection
during the period of time which starts 6 weeks before the
birth and ends 8 weeks afterwards. As a rule, pregnant women
are not allowed to work during this period of time. Their job is
reserved for them and afterwards they can return to their job.
• On application parents receive children´s allowance. More information
provide the Bundesagentur für Arbeit (= “Federal Employment
Agency”) (https://www.arbeitsagentur.de/ukraine/ukrainekindergeld)
.
• You are entitled to a place in a day-care centre (crèche [0
- 3 years] or in a kindergarten [3 years - start of school]).
Apply for the day care place and the exemption from contributions
as early as possible to your municipality. The
application is made via the "Kita-Portal". Ask questions
about it to: Lea Rothbauer rothbauer@kreis-rz.de
• In the “Bundesland” (= “Federal State”) of Schleswig-
Holstein, children and young people usually first learn
'German as a second language' in schools in so-called
DaZ centres. Depending on individual language ability
and free capacities in the DaZ centres, they are integrated
into regular school classes.
• Children between the ages of 6 and 10 attend primary
schools, afterwards secondary schools (“Gemeinschaftsschule”
[= “Community schools”], “Gymnasium” [=
“Grammar schools”]). Usually supplementary language
support programs are offered.
Advice:
Class trips, excursions, school festivals and swimming
lessons are part of the education for all children. Ask
at the Job Centre or at an Ad-vice Centre for Migration
about subsidies for travel costs, lunch, school supplies.
Advice:
After school, it is important for children and young people
to have age-appropriate activities opportunities. There are
clubs, assotiations and youth facilities with various leisure
and sports activities to help them making contacts and to
consolidate their language skills. Subsidies can be applied
for at the Job Centre.
