engl. ⁄ It is full of history, ideal for many occasions
and nowadays it’s coming back into fashion:
traditional costume or Tracht. Those who wear it
show their ties to a certain region and tradition,
experts read it like an open book.
at oktoberfests and traditional concerts lederhosen and dirndl are
presently seeing a colourful revival. The check shirts and revealing
necklines of this trend do not have much in common with actual
traditional costume though. The German term for traditional
costume ‘Tracht’ simply means ‘what is worn’ and is derived from
old High German, it’s history in the alpine can be traced back
through depictions that are up to 1,500 years old. In the 16th
century, the first peasant’s costumes and thus the oldest Walser
costumes appeared, later ideas from the French revolution inspired
the design and a common consciousness in the vale. This is how the
traditional Walser costume became what it is today: an expression
of identity and belonging to a certain culture that defies modern
zeitgeist. Those who wear it proudly express their commitment to
local history and tradition. The ‘Trachtenverein Lech’ (traditional
costume association) was founded in 1980 and is dedicated to
preserving and cultivating traditional costume and the customs
that go with it.
Traditional costume from the Tannbergregion exhibits numerous
different elements that change according to sex, occasion and
time of year. The look of women’s skirts, bodices, aprons and caps
are specified exactly. The same goes for men’s ‘Tschopa’ (jackets),
lederhosen, stockings and hats. Certain details can actually tell you
quite a lot about the person who wears them. Blue stockings you’ll
find on a married man while white ones say: still single!
