engl. ⁄ Hannes Schneider lives on and for his passion:
as owner of the Hotel arlberg in Lech, as co-organizer of
the arlberg Classic Car Rally and as a passionate classic
car fan. Small wonder that our talk about old vehicles,
the community of their owners and the beauty of Lech
makes him go into raptures immediately.
L.L. ⁄ Mr. Schneider, where does your passion for cars come from?
h.s. ⁄ Cars have always been my great passion and in the past five, six
years classic cars have become my hobby. Somehow, it’s something I have
inherited; after all, my grandfather was the first person to own a car in
Lech am arlberg. Since he was not able to drive himself though, he had
a driver.
L.L. ⁄ What does your wife think about your hobby?
h.s. ⁄ She copes very well and what is very practical is that it’s always easy
for her to find me – in the garage! She even shares the car-virus, she likes to
participate in rallies and she enjoys driving competitively. actually, there
is a running gag that asks if a married couple will still speak after they’ve
participated in their first rally. Well I can tell you: the two of us still do.
L.L. ⁄ If money was not an issue: which classic car would you like to have in
your garage?
h.s. ⁄ actually money is not really the primary issue here because it’s not
always the most expensive objects that are the most beautiful. Currently, my
wife and I are looking for a well restored VW pretzel Beetle, they’ve become
quite rare though. Beetles were not considered cars that were worth preserving,
they were driven until rust ate them up and then they were thrown
away. But our main principle here is: you don’t find the car, the car finds
you! It’s always been like that for me.
L.L. ⁄ Do you restore and service your cars yourself?
h.s. ⁄ Fortunately, I have some dear friends that can take care of my cars
while pursuing their own careers – a Scuderia in Carinthia with which
we’ve already organized many great events. But thankfully I’m not all thumbs
either. It’s important for me to not just sit inside the vehicle but to understand
it, too.
