Wax structures on the needles of Norway spruce.
Category Condition of wax
1 Undamaged crystalline structure consisting of a dense array of fine wax crystalloids, up to 2.5 µm
long and 200 nm diameter
2 Semi-crystalline structure, but wax crystalloids beginning to fuse, tubes 200 - 700 nm diameter
3 Increased fusion of wax tubes, giving the wax a melted appearance, approximately half of the
epistomatal chamber occluded by structurally degraded wax, rodlets 700 - 1200 nm diameter
4 Almost total agglomeration of the wax crystalloids retaining very little structural integrity, epistomatal
chamber filled with degraded wax, tubes of indeterminate diameter
5 Total occlusion of the epistomatal chamber by a flat plate of completely degraded wax, with no
structure and forming an amorphous layer
