授業科目の内容:
この授業では,Lafcadio Hearn の作品を主に読みます。予習をしっ
かりした上で説明をよく聴き読解力を高めてほしいと思います。
また,授業中に英英辞典を用います。この授業では特に単語や熟
語の意味を正確に把握し,こまかいニュアンス等に注意することで,
読解能力を伸ばすことを心がけたいと思います。

アメリカ環境文学の古典を読み,考える

授業科目の内容:
アメリカの生物遺伝学者Rachel Carson (1907-64)の主著Silent
Spring(1962)を読みます。この作品は昨今頻繁に議論されるようにな
った環境問題を最も早い時期に論じたものです。精読することによ
って英語読解力を養成することが第一の目的です。それと同時に,
エコロジーや地球環境保護の問題を考え,各自に英語でミニ･プレゼ
ンテーションをしてもらうことで英語での発信能力養成を目指しま
す。

授業科目の内容:
Through reading newspaper articles, essays, stories and poems, students
will build their vocabulary and reading skills such as skimming, scanning,
visualization, inference and prediction. About one-third of classtime will
be spent on pleasure-reading to build fluency. There will also be group
discussions of reading content.

Each class will follow the same pattern, except the last two classes of
each semester : group tasks to build reading skills, followed by discussion
of content, and pleasure reading. There will be a reading skills test and
group presentation at the end of each semester. There will also be weekly
reading and occasional group oral reports assigned as homework.

class is necessary and valuable to make the group work successfully.
