Abstract
A rehabilitation robotic system that shall be able to perform complex daily life tasks (e.g.
pour in a drink) must be able to plan its actions. Each performed action changes the state of
the robot’s environment. Therefore, planning can be seen as the transformation of an initial
situation (i.e. the state of the environment at the beginning of the task execution) into a target
situation. It is evident that from this point of view the determination of the initial situation is a
mandatory prerequisite. This process is called monitoring.
With respect to the current state of the art the realization of fully autonomous task execution
respectively monitoring has to be judged as unrealistic due to the system’s inherent complexity.
For the realization of a feasible system, a semi-autonomous concept is chosen i.e. userinteraction
is intended to support the monitoring process if necessary. The aim is to achieve
the minimum possible cognitive load onto the user by maximizing the amount of information
that can be retrieved autonomously. Altogether the process of acquiring knowledge of the
initial environmental situation shall be performed as an efficient form of man-machineinteraction.
