King George III, 35 aquatints (9 double-page), 31 of which are coloured and 4 are tinted,
and 5 plain engraved plates, large engraved head- and tail-piece; the text leaves are
somewhat stained in the fore-edge margins, 3 of the tinted aquatints and the plain
engraved plates are spotted, but a good, large copy with the colour plates in fine and
crisp condition with brilliant colour, bound in recent half calf and marbled boards,
spine with red label; armorial bookplate of John Pleydell Wilton. 5’500.–
MACHIAVELLI, Nicolò. Historie Fiorentine di Niccolo Machiavelli ... Florence,
Bernardo di Giunta, 27 March 1532. Small 4to., ff. 224, printed in italics, woodcut
printer’s device on title; Italian 18th century polished calf, ornamental gilt border on
covers, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label (upper joint repaired). 21’850.–
First edition of Machiavelli’s last book, the famous history of his native city, a copy
of the second issue with the date 27 March 1532 in the colophon at end. Like most
other copies (cf. Harvard and Newberry Library) this copy lacks the extra gathering
at the end containing the two leaves of errata and the printer’s device. Other copies
are dated 16 March. – Bertelli-Innocenti, p. 8, no. 17, note. This issue not in the
British Library.
A STUNNING SWISS LEGAL MANUSCRIPT
NEUCHÂTEL – Les Principes du Notariat comm’il s’exerce és Etats Souverains de
Neufchatel et Vallangin, en Suisse. Neuchâtel, [1746?]. Folio, pp. [2], 436; ownership
monogram and date 1746 to the front pastedown; title in red and black; with numerous
ornate section-titles; attractively bound in contemporary vellum-backed decorated
boards, spine lettered in ink. 5’000.–
A fine legal manuscript, beautifully and carefully executed, in a calligraphic hand
on thick, good-quality paper. Sadly, its author remains anonymous. This detailed
manuscript offers a rare insight into almost a century of provincial Swiss legal practice,
with many illustrations of real cases from 1660 to the 1740s.
