Only edition of this rare and delightful account of the ice sculptures erected in
Antwerp in the winter of 1772. – NUC locates a single copy at Harvard; RLIN adds
the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Emory and Princeton.

parts in one volume, folio, pp. [viii], 119, [1], 94, (without
the final blank), with large folding engraved frontispiece,
woodcut ornamental initials, head- and tailpieces
and 46 full-page engraved emblems; small wormhole
to blank inner margins of the first leaves; larger
track to blank outer margins of the last seven leaves; a
fine copy in contemporary vellum over boards, minor
restorations to spine; from the library of the Canons of
Marchthal. 17’250.–
The scarce first edition, second issue, of the most magnificent
Swiss emblem book. The artist, Gabriel
Ehringer, from Augsburg, the leading German centre of
engraving, produced the striking large-format emblems within elaborate Baroque cartouches

SPON, Isaac [i.e. Jacob]. The History of the City and State of Geneva, from its first
Foundation to this present Time. London, Bernard White, 1687. Folio, pp. [6], 250,
[6], with engraved frontispiece and four plates, including a view of the city, and a folding
view of the country round about Geneva; a handsome, very good copy in contemporary
panelled and mottled calf, neatly rebacked. 3’450.–
First edition in English of a well-illustrated work, published originally in French in

TOSSANUS, Daniel. The Lamentations and holy mourninges of the Prophet
Jeremiah … translated out of French into English, by Tho. Sto[cker] gent. London,
John Windet for Humfrey Bate, [1587]. 12mo., pp. 46, [264], with a woodcut coat of
arms dated 1577 on the verso of the title-page, a well used copy; contemporary
English calf panelled with blind and faded gilt fillets; restored 8’600.–
First edition in English of Daniel Toussain’s Les lamentations et saincts regretz du
prophète Jérémie, avec paraphrase et exposition appropriée à ce temps en toutes
sortes lamentable (Spire, 1584, is the French edition cited in ESTC, presumably the
first). Toussain (1541-1602) was a Swiss Reformed pastor whose peripatetic career
was dogged by both Roman Catholic and Lutheran intolerance. Thomas Stocker
was responsible for a number of translations from the French between 1569 and
1592, including An excellent treatise of the immortalytie of the Soule (1581) and
three other works by Calvin. STC and RLIN-ESTC record only three copies, Folger,
Cambridge, and Columbia. – STC 2779.5.
