to blank inner margins of the first leaves; larger<br />
track to blank outer margins of the last seven leaves; a<br />
fine copy in contemporary vellum over boards, minor<br />
restorations to spine; from the library of the Canons of<br />

The scarce first edition, second issue, of the most magnificent<br />
Swiss emblem book. The artist, Gabriel<br />
Ehringer, from Augsburg, the leading German centre of<br />
engraving, produced the striking large-format emblems within elaborate Baroque cartouches<br />

Foundation to this present Time. London, Bernard White, 1687. Folio, pp. [6], 250,<br />
[6], with engraved frontispiece and four plates, including a view of the city, and a folding<br />
view of the country round about Geneva; a handsome, very good copy in contemporary<br />
panelled and mottled calf, neatly rebacked. 3’450.–<br />
First edition in English of a well-illustrated work, published originally in French in<br />

TOSSANUS, Daniel. The Lamentations and holy mourninges of the Prophet<br />
Jeremiah … translated out of French into English, by Tho. Sto[cker] gent. London,<br />
John Windet for Humfrey Bate, [1587]. 12mo., pp. 46, [264], with a woodcut coat of<br />
arms dated 1577 on the verso of the title-page, a well used copy; contemporary<br />
English calf panelled with blind and faded gilt fillets; restored 8’600.–<br />
First edition in English of Daniel Toussain’s Les lamentations et saincts regretz du<br />
prophète Jérémie, avec paraphrase et exposition appropriée à ce temps en toutes<br />
sortes lamentable (Spire, 1584, is the French edition cited in ESTC, presumably the<br />
first). Toussain (1541-1602) was a Swiss Reformed pastor whose peripatetic career<br />
was dogged by both Roman Catholic and Lutheran intolerance. Thomas Stocker<br />
was responsible for a number of translations from the French between 1569 and<br />
1592, including An excellent treatise of the immortalytie of the Soule (1581) and<br />
three other works by Calvin. STC and RLIN-ESTC record only three copies, Folger,<br />
Cambridge, and Columbia. – STC 2779.5.<br />
