Francois Henri de Montmorency-Bouteville, Herzog von Luxemburg-
Piney
Er wurde am 8. Januar 1628 in Paris geboren. Sechs Monate zuvor war
sein Vater, François de Montmorency-Bouteville (1600-1627), auf der
Place de Grève enthauptet worden, weil er den Marquis de Beuvron im
Duell getötet hatte. Francois Henri wurde von seiner Tante, Charlotte
de Montmorency, Prinzessin der Condé, aufgenommen und erzogen.
1661 heiratete er die beste Partie Frankreichs, Madeleine Charlotte
de Clermont-Tonnerre, Herzogin von Luxemburg-Piney, Prinzessin de
Tingry und Erbin des Herzogtums Luxemburg. Nach der Hochzeit wurde
Montmorency jure uxoris zum Herzog von Piney-Luxemburg erhoben und
zum Mitglied des französischen Hochadels ernannt.
Als Marschall von Frankreich und Luxemburg und aus dem bedeutenden
Geschlecht der Montmorency, wurde er zu einem der berühmtesten
Feldherrn des 17. Jahrhunderts und einer der wichtigsten Generale
Ludwigs XIV. Seine kriegerischen Erfolge, seine Grausamkeit und auch
sein glanzvoller Wiederaufstieg, nachdem er in der Bastille eingekerkert
war, brachten ihn in den Ruf, mit dem Teufel im Bunde zu stehen. Dieses
Gerücht war die Grundlage für die seit ca. 1680 bekannte Sage vom
Herzog von Luxemburg, die in Form von Pamphleten, Volksbüchern und
Flugschriften in Holland und Frankreich, aber auch in Deutschland weit
verbreitet war.

was born in Paris January 8, 1628. His father François de Montmorency-
Bouteville (1600-1627) had been beheaded at Place de Grève six months
earlier for killing the Marquis de Beuvron in a duel. Francois Henri was
taken in and brought up by his aunt Charlotte de Montmorency, princess
of Condé. In 1661 he married the greatest heiress in France, Madeleine
Charlotte de Clermont-Tonnerre, duchess of Luxembourg-Piney, princess
of Tingry and heiress of the Luxembourg dukedom, and was created duke
of Luxembourg-Piney and peer of France.
As a member of the eminent Montmorency family and a marshal of
France and Luxembourg, Montmorency-Bouteville became one of the
most famous military leader of the 17th century and one of Louis’ XIV
most important generals. His wartime successes, his ferociousness and his
splendid comeback after an imprisonment in the Bastille gained him the
evil reputation of being in league with the devil. This rumour later turned
into the tale of the duke of Luxembourg which started being spread in
pamphlets and storybooks in Holland, France and Germany around 1680.
