Andrew von den Mitgliedern der Polytechnic Harriers als Zeichen der
Wertschätzung und Würdigung seiner großen Verdienste um den Verein
als Honorarsekretär, 27. März 1909”), Drücker für Chronograph bei “2”,
Gehäusemacher-Punzzeichen “AB”. Zffbl.: Email, cremefarben, radiale
röm. Zahlen, eingesetzte kleine Sekunde, eingesetzter 30 Min.-Zähler,
signiert, nummeriert, gebläute Spade-Zeiger. Werk: Brückenwerk, gekörnt,
vergoldet, gebläute Schrauben, feinst geschliffene und anglierte Chronographenstahlteile,
Schaltrad, spiegelpolierte anglierte Doppelzeigerzange
mit Schaltrad für Schleppzeiger, Goldschrauben-Komp.-Unruh, gebläute

Jack M. Andrew, der Sekretär der “Polytechnic Harriers”
Der Philanthrop Quintin Hogg (1845-1903) war der festen Überzeugung,
dass Vereinssport sowohl der Gesundheit als auch der Charakterbildung
förderlich war und sah diesen als wesentlichen Bestandteil seiner Stiftung
für junge Christen und der später daraus entstehenden Organisationen
Verein christlicher junger Männer und polytechnischer Lehranstalt an.
Nachdem das Polytechnikum 1882 in den ehemaligen Sitz des königlichen
Polytechnikums in der Regent Street umgezogen war, fand 1883 das
Eröffnungstreffen der Harriers statt, eines Laufclubs. 1908 wurde der
Verein mit der Ausrichtung des Probelaufs für den Marathon beauftragt,
der bei den olympischen Spielen in London 1908 durchgeführt werden
sollte. Der Lauf, der erste seiner Art in Großbritannien, ging über 23 Meilen
von Schloß Windsor nach Wembley Park. Auch der olympische Lauf selbst
wurde von Jack Andrew, dem Sekretär der Harriers ausgerichtet.
Eine der wohl bekanntesten Sportfotografien aller Zeiten zeigt den
erschöpften italienischen Bäcker Dorando Pietri, wie er dem Zusammenbruch
nahe mit Lederschuhen die wohl gut ein Pfund wogen
dem Sekretär des Vereins Polytechnic Harriers, Jack Andrew über die
Ziellinie des olympischen Marathons von 1908 in die Arme fällt.

A very fine, rare gent’s pocket watch with split seconds chronograph
and 30 min. counter - with original box - presentation watch
for the invaluable services at the Olympic Games in London in 1908
Case: 18k gold, smooth, monogrammed, gold dome with presentation
engraving: “Presented to J. M. Andrew by the members of the polytechnic
harriers as a token of esteem and appreciation of the invaluable services
rendered by him to the club as Hon. Secretary, 27.March 1909”, pusher for
chronograph at “2”, case maker punch mark “AB”. Dial: enamel, off-white,
radial Roman numerals, sunk auxiliary seconds, sunk 30 min. counter,
signed, numbered, blued spade hands. Movm.: bridge movement, frosted,
gilt, blued screws, very finely ground and bevelled chronograph steel parts,
ratchet wheel, mirror polished double hand tong with polished bevelling,
separate ratchet wheel for split seconds chronograph, gold screw
compensation balance, blued balance spring, chatoned ruby endstone on
balance, lever and escape wheel.
The Polytechnic Harriers secretary, Jack M. Andrew
The philanthropist Quintin Hogg (1845-1903) was convinced of the
health-giving and character-building qualities derived from organised
sport, and saw it as an integral part of the work of his foundation the
Youths’ Christian Institute, and its successors the Young Men’s Christian
Institute and Polytechnic Institute. After the Institute moved in 1882 to
Regent Street, formerly home of the Royal Polytechnic Institution, a
harriers (running) club had its inaugural meeting in 1883. The club was
known as the Polytechnic Harriers. In 1908 Club was invited to organise
the trial race for the marathon, which was to be introduced into the
Olympic Games in London in 1908. The race, the first to be run in the UK,
was run over 23 miles from Windsor Castle to Wembley Park. The Olympic
event was also planned by Jack Andrew, secretary of the Harriers.
Probably the most famous sports photograph of all time shows the
wraith-like figure of an Italian baker, struggling in the last stages
of exhaustion, his feet encased in leather boots weighing at least a
pound, falling into the arms of the Polytechnic Harriers secretary,
Jack Andrew, at the finish of the 1908 Olympic marathon.
