Die Entwicklung der Gletscher bis Ende
des 21. Jahrhunderts
Der Schwund der Gletscher ist eines
der deutlichsten Anzeichen des
Klimawandels.
The retreat of glaciers is one of the
clearest signs of climate change.
Comparison of today’s glaciers with historical photographs or the
moraines left behind at the end of the Little Ice Age around 1850
will undoubtedly cause most observers to ask how long the glaciers
will continue to exist.
The extent of a glacier is a product of the interplay between
ice formation, melting and ice flow. The new formation of
ice from snow and the melting of firn and ice is directly associated
fliessbewegung.
Dabei stehen die Neubildung von Eis aus
with the prevailing weather conditions. While the accumulation of
notwendig. Im Rahmen einer Zusammenarbeit von den
Glaziologen der ETH Zürich mit Mathematikern der EPF Lausanne
(MATHICSE/EPFL) entstand ein neues numerisches Glet-
the snow that feeds the glacier depends mainly on precipitation,
the energy supplied to the glacier is what decides the melt rate.
Air temperature is a good indicator of this. Finally, the ice flow is
responsible how the glacier geometry is adjusted on the changes
in the accumulation and melting conditions, all depending on the
size and slope of the glacier.
Projections of future glacier evolution require information
about expected climate conditions, as well as detailed knowledge
of the ice thickness and its spatial distribution. In a
collaboration between glaciologists from ETH Zürich and mathematicians
from EPF Lausanne (MATHICSE/EPFL), a new numerical
model of the glacier evolution that accounts for snow
accumulation, melt and ice flow has been developed. Given
changes in precipitation and temperature the model calculates
the evolution of the glacier geometry. Due to the dynamic re-
Glacier evolution up to the end
of the 21st century
