die Grundsteinlegung des neuen HIA-Gebäudes sowie der Verlängerung
der bestehenden HIF-Halle. «Dies ist ein wichtiger ‹corner stone›
für uns», betonte Lorenz Hurni, Departementsvorsteher des D-BAUG
auf dem Hönggerberg.
Tatsächlich erfüllt sich mit dem Neubau für das Departement
D-BAUG und die ihm angegliederte Versuchsanstalt ein zentrales Anliegen.
Bislang forschte diese fernab von der Lehre im Zentrum, während
das Departement seit seiner Gründung 1999 seinen Sitz auf dem
Hönggerberg hat. Das ändert sich 2013 mit dem Umzug: «Zum ersten
Mal werden das VAW und sein Departement D-BAUG am gleichen
Standort sein», sagte Hurni. Der Weg dorthin war lang. Bereits in den
siebziger Jahren beschäftigte sich der damalige Direktor der VAW mit
einem Standort auf dem Hönggerberg. Zahlreiche Projektberichte und
-skizzen verkamen in den folgenden Jahren jedoch zu Papiertigern.
Robert Boes, der jetzige Direktor, hat dafür eine Erklärung: «Damals
war der Nutzungsdruck nicht so gross wie heute.» Der Druck von aussen
entstand erst in den letzten Jahren – seit feststeht, dass das Gebäude
an der Gloriastrasse abgerissen und dem geplanten Gebäude
des neuen Departements Health Science and Technology (D-HEST)
weichen soll. Das hat dem Projekt eines neuen HIA-Gebäudes auf dem
Campus Hönggerberg Aufwind verschafft, sind Boes und Hurni überzeugt.
Ein besonderer Festakt
Mit dem HIA-Bau erhält die Versuchsanstalt eine rund 1500 m2 grosse
Versuchshalle, Werkstätten für die Mechanik, Schlosserei und Schreinerei,
Büros mit rund 15 Arbeitsplätzen, Infrastruktur-, Technik- und Lagerräume
sowie Lagerplätze im Freien. Kernstück des Projekts ist die
Versuchshalle, wo physikalische Fluss- und Wasserbaumodelle für die
Grundlagen und Auftragsforschung erstellt werden sollen. Beim HIA-
Gebäude soll es in Zukunft nicht bleiben. Geplant ist ein Holzbau, der
an die neue Versuchshalle angebaut werden und der Versuchsanstalt
weitere 58 Arbeitsplätze bescheren soll.
Daneben erhält das Institut für Baustatik und Konstruktion
mehr Platz für seine Versuche: Um 25 Meter wird die bestehende HIF-
Halle verlängert. Die Forscher werden darin künftig Experimente an
Bauteilen bis im Massstab 1:1 durchführen können. Geplant sind
zudem Versuche zur Erdbebensicherheit. Bei der Verlängerung der
Bauhalle wird ein neuer Aufspannbogen eingezogen. Diese Spezialneering

“This is an important ‘cornerstone’ for us,” said Lorenz Hurni,
chair of D-BAUG.
It is indeed an important event for D-BAUG and the affiliated
Laboratory. Since it was founded in 1999, D-BAUG has
been located on Hönggerberg and the research conducted at
VAW was all done removed from the center of teaching. That
will change in 2013 when they move to their new location. “For
the first time VAW and D-BAUG will be together on the same
campus”, said Hurni. In the seventies, the director of the lab at
the time wanted to make the move to Hönggerberg. Many project
reports and sketches bogged down in paperwork over the
years. Robert Boes, the current director of VAW has an explanation
for why it took so long. “There wasn’t as much pressure
then,” he explained. External pressure was nonexistent until
plans were made to tear down the old building on Gloriastrasse
to make room for a new one for the Department of Health Science
and Technology (D-HEST). Both Boes and Hurni are convinced
that this was the deciding factor that brought new wind
to the stalled project at the Hönggerberg Campus.
A Special Ceremony
Construction of the new HIA building gives the laboratory a
1500 m2 testing hall, mechanics, locksmith and carpentry workshops,
offices with space for about 15 workers, infrastructure,
technical and storage rooms as well as an outside storage area.
The centerpiece of the project is the testing hall, which will
house physical flow and hydraulic models for basic and applied
research. Future plans do not end with the HIA building. A
wooden extension to the testing hall is also being planned; it
will provide space for another 58 employees.
The Institute for Structural Engineering is also getting
more space for experiments. The HIF hall is going to get a 25
meter extension. Researchers will be able to conduct experiments
on components at a 1:1 scale; earthquake safety experiments
are also planned. The extension will include a mounting
sheet. This special design with a continuous steel core results
in an especially strong ceiling. It will also have tension anchors
