In 1913, after completing an apprenticeship in masonry, he received the degree of master mason. He soon founded a construction company and later moved to Switzerland with his family. He founded the corporation for Structural and Civil Engineering (BAU AG) in 1934. The company had 300 employees and built both commercial and residential properties, as well as government subsidized housing. Looking ahead, Albert Lück planned to promote his employees and support civil engineering. With this in mind, he established the Alfred Lück Foundation at ETH Zurich in 1957. Today, the foundation strives to promote teaching and research in the field of civil engineering at ETH Zurich, mainly in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering. This most recent instance of support is the fourth time since 2008 that the foundation has intervened. It has supported promising masters students in civil engineering, the professorship in Structural Mechanics (Prof. Eleni Chatzi), as well as the research project “Stocks & Flows” at the Institute of Historic Building research and Conservation in the Department of Architecture. Dedication of the Albert Lück Lecture Hall To recognize Albert Lück’s contributions, the directors of ETH Zurich, and the Department for Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (D-BAUG) and the ETH Zurich Foundation, together with the Board of the Albert Lück Foundation dedicated the lecture hall E1 in the HIL building of D-BAUG to the memory of their benefactor Albert Lück.
