BAUSTATIK ALS BESTSELLER
STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING BESTSELLER
Da liest man
bly the last one who can bring together all the different theories
and approaches that are part of an ETH education.
Your book’s clarity and lucidity stand out. Is that a concern
that your students impressed upon you
It’s just that I’ve been teaching so long! I was already developing
material when I was a research assistant. When I returned
to academia after my time working in industry, I realized I had
a once in a lifetime chance. I was the first since 1927, when the
professorship in statics, bridge and structural engineering was
separated into two professorships, to be able to offer a comprehensive
view of structural engineering and that is reflected
in my book.
At the end of every chapter, there are practical exercises.
One of these tasks asks the reader to prepare for an inspection
of a hiking path with a builder. Why do you place
such high value on the practical side
I want to prepare my students for working as engineers. The
various examples give them a foundation and the exercises add
depth to their studies. Through the use of relatively simple examples
the basic principles of structural engineering become
accessible. The students can then take what they have learned
and easily apply it to more complicated problems.
In chapter two you give a brief history of the theoretical
foundation of structural engineering. You mentioned everyone
who contributed to the field, starting with Archimedes,
to Bernoulli and on through the theoreticians of the twentieth
century. Why did you do want to do that
I have a great respect for the accomplishments of our forefathers.
Leonhard Euler for example was a genius; he recognized
that a material body as a whole, as well each individual part of
the whole, is in equilibrium within itself. This is a fundamental
discovery; we must remember, also when he came to this realization.
He was a contemporary of Mozart! It is important that
students realize where these accomplishments came from.
