The Institute of Geodesy <strong>an</strong>d Navigation has its own<br />

GNSS/INS Laboratory ("Geodaetische Messkuppel") where<br />

the instruments are operated <strong>an</strong>d maintained. The tasks of<br />

the Laboratory include practical tests, perm<strong>an</strong>ent measurements<br />

<strong>an</strong>d experiments related to the research projects as<br />

well as testing <strong>an</strong>d calibration of sensors. A broad r<strong>an</strong>ge of<br />

GNSS equipment is available at the institute <strong>an</strong>d c<strong>an</strong> be<br />

divided into static/perm<strong>an</strong>ent, field <strong>an</strong>d real-time kinematic<br />

receivers.<br />

A GPS Reference Station is operated as <strong>an</strong> aid for several<br />

projects using a dual-frequency Ashtech Z-Sensor together<br />

with a choke ring <strong>an</strong>tenna having a highly stable <strong>an</strong>tenna<br />

phase centre by its Dorne Margoline dipole elements. Other<br />

receivers like the NovAtel MiLLennium OEM3 (L1/L2 <strong>an</strong>d<br />

WAAS/EGNOS) <strong>an</strong>d OEM4 c<strong>an</strong> be easily set-up for<br />

reference station tasks, <strong>an</strong>d Europe<strong>an</strong> Septentrio PolaRx<br />

2-frequency receivers (L1/L2, WAAS/EGNOS) are also<br />

usable as reference receivers. Most of these devices c<strong>an</strong> also<br />

be set up for field campaign jobs <strong>an</strong>d, additionally, Trimble<br />

4000 SSE receivers with integrated data logging c<strong>an</strong> be<br />

employed for such tasks. Finally, several receiver pairs are<br />

capable of real-time positioning in r<strong>an</strong>ge- or carrier phasedifferential<br />

mode, e.g. the NovAtel OEM4-RT <strong>an</strong>d the<br />

NAVCOM NCT-2000D offering a high accuracy of 5 to 10<br />

mm. The latest receiver in this category is a Trimble 5800<br />

RTK rover which has a GPS/WAAS/EGNOS capability.<br />

It is a dual frequency receiver with 24 ch<strong>an</strong>nels.<br />

Data communication is either realized via the University<br />

Intr<strong>an</strong>et by fibre optic wire or via wireless telemetry links.<br />

Several telemetry systems are available in order to enable<br />

real-time positioning. A wide-r<strong>an</strong>ge system (25 W tr<strong>an</strong>smission<br />

power, tr<strong>an</strong>smission frequency near 400 MHz, up<br />

to 80 km tr<strong>an</strong>smission r<strong>an</strong>ge) <strong>an</strong>d several short-r<strong>an</strong>ge<br />

systems (1 mW up to 1 W, spread spectrum systems at 900<br />

MHz <strong>an</strong>d conventional telemetry at 400 MHz) are in use.<br />

Moreover, a wireless local area network with several access<br />

points (roaming capabilities included) at a frequency of 2.4<br />

GHz is used to provide network communications where no<br />

wire-LAN is available.<br />

The institute owns a L1 GPS hardware simulator STR 4760<br />

of GSS (Global Simulation Systems, now Spirent) that is<br />

used for hardware in-the-loop testing as well as for the<br />

receiver calibration (e.g. inter-ch<strong>an</strong>nel biases).
