The f<strong>und</strong>amental recognition of the statistical properties of<br />

the <strong>von</strong> Mises (circular) normal distribution of GPS carrier<br />

phase observables, <strong>an</strong>d the related hypothesis tests about<br />

the <strong>von</strong> Mises distribution are two main results of this study,<br />

which will not only subst<strong>an</strong>tially improve the theoretical<br />

backgro<strong>und</strong> <strong>an</strong>d application reality of GPS geodesy <strong>an</strong>d<br />

navigation, but also be signific<strong>an</strong>t to the forthcoming<br />

Galileo, Europe’s new civili<strong>an</strong> Global Navigation Satellite<br />
