The network of the ZDS comprises German and international institutions and associations. These include
the BDSI – the Association of the German Confectionery Industry; CAOBISCO – the Association of the
Chocolate, Biscuit and Confectionery Industries of the EU; IQ.Köln, the institute for the promotion of quality
in the confectionery industry; SG – Sweets Global Network e.V.; the University of Applied Sciences,
Lippe and Höxter in Lemgo; the DIL – the German Institute of Food technology; the GDL e.V. association
of German food technologists, and many more.
We would like to introduce the BDSI Association of the German Confectionery Industry in somewhat greater detail.
Who or what are the BDSI?
The Bundesverband der Deutschen Süßwarenindustrie
is the Association of the
German Confectionery Industry and its
headquarters are in Bonn. It represents
the economic interests of the German
confectionery industry. The BDSI is
therefore an industrial as well as an employers’
association. Its members –
mainly small and medium-sized enterprises
– together produce around 90 %
of the confectionery in Germany.
The BDSI covers the product or technical
areas of chocolate goods, sugar confectionery,
fine bakery products, quality
ices, snacks and raw mixtures. The BDSI
is a trade association with 215 member
companies who have around 250 operations.
As a powerful interest group on
national, European and international
level, the BDSI is the mouthpiece of the
confectionery industry towards the
public. In addition, it is a service provider,
information agency and problemsolver
for its members.
What are the tasks and main
activities of the BDSI?
In food legislation and safety, the BDSI
stands for consultation and competence
and is the partner to consult in all questions
relating specifically to confectionery
in the areas of food production, distribution
and labelling law, quality,
health and consumer protection. The
BDSI safeguards the interests of the industry
with regard to national and EU legislation.
In matters of quality management and
hygiene, the BDSI arranges an exchange
of experiences in the areas of
quality assurance and quality management
and it elaborates guidelines on
good hygiene practice.
The BDSI conducts an independent
wage policy. It concludes collective
wage agreements for the member firms
that are subject to these and for their
staff.
In collective bargaining law and labour
law, the BDSI informs and advises its
member companies and looks after its
members’ interests on the board of the
ZDS Central College of the German
Confectionery Industry as well as the
BGN social insurance organisation for
foodstuffs and catering.
In the area of trade, the BDSI analyses
trade offers and particularly the conclusion
of framework and central agreements.
If need be, it intervenes against
inequitable contracts formed on the
part of trade.
For PR on behalf of the sector, the BDSI
cultivates contact with journalists, opinion
leaders and consumer organisations. It
organises press conferences and informs
educational institutions, teachers,
diploma students and pupils. The BDSI
is represented on the committees of
national, European and international
bodies.
The task areas of the BDSI include food
production and distribution law, food
safety, quality management and hygiene,
health and diet, food chemistry (the LCI
institute), social policy and labour law,
trade including foreign trade, raw materials
and agricultural policy, the drawing
up of official statistics, the subjects of
packaging and the environment, public
relations work for the entire confectionery
sector and further services.
