Gesslerburg Küssnacht
am Rigi
Die Gesslerburg, wie die
Ruine seit dem ausgehenden
19. Jahrhundert heisst,
gehört heute der Eidgenossenschaft,
welche die Burg
1910 erwarb und vor dem
Abbruch bewahrte. Die
ersten Burg herren waren
die Edlen von Küssnacht.
Ritter Eppo verlangte unnachsichtig
Steuern, Abgaben
HIGHLIGHT
The Gesslerburg
in Küssnacht am Rigi
The Gesslerburg is an old
ruin located at the foot of
Mount Rigi. Since 1910 it
has been owned and preserved
by the Swiss Confederation.
Originally the
first castle lords were the
nobles of Küssnacht. Because
the Knight Eppo
was relentless in his extortionist
demands for taxes
and compulsory labour, he
nearly lost his life when
the enraged townsfolk of Küssnacht, Immensee and
Haltikon ambushed him in 1302.
According to the historian Tschudi and several old
tales, the Habsburg bailiff Gessler (the villain from
the Wilhelm Tell legend) had his base at the Gesslerburg
and hence lent his name to the castle. The coat
of arms for the district of Küssnacht is also several
hundred years old and dates from the 13th century.
It features a white pillow on a red background.
The Gesslerburg is ideal for family excursions and
includes a panoramic vantage point with a great view.
There are several open fire pits and marked hiking
paths around the ruin, letting you combine a hike in
nature with a casual grill party.
