Rathaus Sarnen
In unmittelbarer Nähe des malerischen Dorfplatzes
von Sarnen steht das schöne, alte Rathaus (1729–1732).
Es repräsentiert den Kanton Obwalden bereits seit
bald 600 Jahren.
bauliche Sicherheitsmassnahmen
gegen künftige Hochwasser
wie gegen den unbefugten
Zutritt getroffen. Das Rathaus
stand und steht im Mittelpunkt
des politischen Lebens des Kantons
Obwalden. Anfänglich, bis
1646, tagte sogar die Landsgemeinde
darin. Früher tagten
auch die Gerichte im Rathaus
und es wurden die wertvollen
Bestände des Staatsarchivs aufbewahrt.
Das Rathaus ist bis heute der
Sitz der obersten kantonalen
Behörden, des Regierungsrats
und des Kantonsrats.
The historic assembly
hall in Sarnen
One of the most beautiful buildings in Sarnen is the
old assembly hall, located near the picturesque town
square. Built between 1729 and 1732, the hall has
served as the principal government building of Canton
Obwalden for nearly 300 years.
The first assembly hall in Sarnen was erected on
the same site as early 1418. In August of 1468, however,
it was destroyed by fire. Consequently, a new
stone structure with three stories and a distinctive
tower was built as a replacement. Finally, in 1732 the
existing hall took shape.
Thanks to an extensive restoration from 1977 to
1978, the building’s exterior presents itself in near
original condition. Following
flood damages in August 2005,
several improvements were
made to the hall’s interior. These
were completed in 2007 and
included the installation of a
new handicapped accessible
entrance as well as a lift. New
flood control measures were
also implemented in order to
safeguard against possible future
water damage.
The assembly hall has always
been at the centre of civic life in
Canton Obwalden. Until 1646 it
hosted the local Landsgemeinde,
while today it houses most of
the cantonal authorities, including
the legislative and executive
branches of government.
