like to have a younger person take
over some of the operational and
managerial responsibilities.”
Sabina Hofer will decide at the
end of the year, if she formally
wants to succeed her dad and take
over the business from him for
good. Already in the summer of
2009 she started to train as a professional
fisher, visiting a school
on the banks of Lake Starnberg in
Bavaria, just 25 kilometres southwest
of Munich. Two years later, in
the summer of 2011, she successfully
completed the programme
and since then may call herself a
fully licensed fisher. The German
diploma is also accepted in Switzerland.
Already during her training,
Hofer actively worked in the
family business in Meggen.
She remarks: “It is important
that somebody lead this family
business, who also has some sort

an ordinary job and really requires
a lot of hard work and many extra
hours. For all of these reasons, I really
need to consider carefully if I
will want to do it on a long-term
basis.” Indeed she is still looking to
find herself and her exact role in
a domain that is otherwise totally
dominated by men. “I still also
want to live like a lady and not just
have my entire life occupied by my
work only.” As such, she enjoys
spending her free time in the
mountains, meeting her friends or
dancing tango. “I am still looking
for the optimal work-life balance,
a compromise between private life
and profession.”
