L.L. You’re from Rhine valley in<br />
Switzerland, on the border with<br />
Vorarlberg. What was it that brought<br />
you to <strong>St</strong>uben and why is it the perfect<br />
location for Longboard Classic?<br />
P.G. After a few years as a rider for<br />
the Sims Snowboard te<strong>am</strong> my partner<br />
Harry Gunz and I founded the brand<br />
Crazy Banana in 1984. Back then<br />
most people had not yet heard of<br />
snowboarding and at many lifts we<br />
had to use all our powers of<br />
persuasion to be allowed to go up the<br />
mountain. In <strong>St</strong>uben that was different<br />
from the beginning on. Rudi<br />
Pichler from <strong>St</strong>uben tourism just<br />
said: don’t cause any trouble and<br />
come back down in one piece. That was the beginning of my lifelong<br />
passion for the snowboard paradise that is <strong>St</strong>uben and my favourite<br />
mountain, Albona. Because we kept taking pictures on Albona for<br />
catalogues and ads and tested all our boards there we were the first<br />
snowboard company to officially start selling longboards. Big mountains<br />
need big boards! And at Longboard Classic they are celebrated.<br />
L.L. They say that the idea for Longboard Classic c<strong>am</strong>e to you 20<br />
years ago at the halfway station on the Albona ridge. Is that what it<br />
was? Were you inspired by the beautiful views?<br />
P.G. That’s true. The idea c<strong>am</strong>e to me while I was with Jacky in the<br />
halfway station restaurant. Every Friday dozens of friends would call<br />
and ask where we’d go boarding on the weekend. And the answer was<br />
usually the s<strong>am</strong>e: Albona, departure at the Crazy Banana office at 7 <strong>am</strong><br />
and then up the mountain on the first lift. And we told ourselves: why<br />
not host an official day where friends and their friends meet in <strong>St</strong>uben<br />
and then all of us together ride Albona down to <strong>St</strong>uben? In the first year<br />
we got a total of 80 people together. Each year the numbers increased<br />
and meanwhile there are almost 500 riders who participate. We are the<br />
snowboard race with the highest number of participants in the whole<br />
world and all of my old friends from the 80s like Terry Kidwell, Shawn<br />
Farmer, and Jose Fernandes still come to visit regularly. What I still find
