Großer Majolika-Platte aus der Werkstatt

Durchmesser: 41,5 cm.
Castelli, 17. Jahrhundert.
Die Fahne zieren Arabeskenranken und Blüten, die
je von einem feinen Dekorband in Gelb gerahmt
sind. Im Scheitel ist ein Kardinalswappen zu se -
hen, das dem der Familie Mafii oder einem vereinfachten
Corsini-Wappen ähnelt. Im Spiegel ist der
Triumph der Amphitrite dargestellt. Um Amphitrite
gruppieren sich verschiedene Nymphen, sie brei -
tet ihre Arme aus und reckt sich empor zu zwei
herbeieilenden Amoretten, einer hält Siegeskränze,
der andere schießt einen Pfeil ab. Links ist ein gewaltiger
Triton zu sehen, mehrere Bewohner der
Seewelt sind im Wasser verstreut gezeigt, von
recht nähert sich ein weiterer auf zwei Wasserwe -
sen reitender Meeresgott. An der fernen Küste
stehen die Drei Grazien und blicken zu der Szene.
Auf der Landzunge sind mehrere Gebäude, darun -
ter ein gewölbter Tempel zu sehen sowie im Meer
vor der Küste drei Schiffe. Bemalung in Blau, Gelb,
Rot, Mangan und Grün. Guter Zustand.
Anmerkung:
Die literarische Grundlage bilden Ovids Metamor -
pho sen, nach welchen Neptun sich in die Nymphe
verliebte, diese sich ihm aber entzog. Er sendete
daraufhin einen Delfin, dem es gelang, ihre Liebe
zu gewinnen. (9300083)
Large maiolica dish from the workshop

Castelli, 17th century.
The border is decorated with arabesques and flowers,
each enclosed by a fine yellow ribbon. The
top centre of the border depicts a cardinal's coat
of arms, similar to the arms of the Mafii family or
like a simpler version of the Corsini coat of arms.
The centre depicts the Triumph of Amphitrite.
Amphitrite is surrounded by Nymphs, with her
arms stretched out she reaches up to two Cupids
hurry ing towards her. One of the Cupids holds
Victor's laurels, the other fires an arrow. To the left
a migh ty Triton and sea creatures are scattered in
the water, another sea god approaches from the
right riding on two sea creatures. The Three Graces
stand on a distant shore looking onto the scene.
The headland is depicted with several buildings including
a domed temple and three ships near the
shore at sea. Painted in blue, yellow, red, manganese
and green. Good condition.
Notes:
The literary source for this scene is Ovid's Meta -
mor phoses. According to legend, Neptune falls in
love with a Nymph, but not returning his love, she
runs away from him. Consequently, he sends a
dolphin, who is able to win her love for him.

Höhe: 28,5 cm.
Durchmesser: 19,5 cm.
Castelli, 17. Jahrhundert.
Pharmazeutische Flasche. Die Flasche bauchig, auf
gekehltem Ring mit langem, engem Hals. Auf wei -
ßem Fond zarte Bemalung. Unten verläuft ein Band
mit der Aufschrift "A/CEPE/ALB" . Darüber steht
die Allegorie der Religion mit Helm, flammendem
Herz in einer Hand, in der anderen die beiden Ge -
setzestafeln des Alten Testaments und die Heilige
Schrift. Sie steht auf der inselartigen Landzunge
zwischen einem grünenden und einem verdorrten
Baum, die für Leben und Tod stehen. Darüber steht
die Inschrift "FEDE CATTOCLICA" (ital. katholi scher
Glaube). Bemalung in Blau, Grün, Gelb und Orange -
rot auf weißem Fond. Am Hals rest.
Anmerkung:
Die Aufschrift könnte Folgendes bedeuten: "A" als
Abkürzung für Aqua oder Adeps (Schmalz), "CEPE"
als Plural für Cepa (Zwiebeln), "ALB" für alba (weiß).
Anmerkung II:
1625 kam eine neue Ausgabe zu Cesare Ripas
ikonografischen Lexikon "Iconoliga" von 1593
heraus, in der ein Artikel zur "Fede Cattolica" stand.
Die Neuauflage wurde vom Cavaliere d'Arpino illustriert.
Diese Illustration diente wohl als Vorlage
für die Bemalung der Vase. Die Parallelen zur Be -
malung der vorliegenden Flasche werden besonders
in der Behandlung der Gewandfalten deutlich.

Castelli, 17th century.
Globular drug bottle on tapering foot ring with long,
narrow neck. Ornamented with delicate painted
decoration against a white ground. A scroll underneath
inscribed A/CEPE/ALB. Over the scroll a depiction
of the allegory of Religion holding a helmet
and flaming heart in one hand and the Tablets of
Stone from the Old Testament and the Holy Bible
in the other. She is standing on an island-like headland
between one greening tree and one withered
tree, symbolising Life and Death. Inscribed FEDE
CATTOCLICA (Italian: Catholic faith) overhead. Pain -
ted in blue, green, yellow and tangerine against a
white ground. Neck restored.
Notes I:
The inscription could imply the following: 'A'
could be an abbreviation for aqua or adeps (lard),
'CEPE' as plural for cepa (onion), 'ALB' for alba
(white).
Notes II:
The new edition of Cesare Ripa's iconographic
encyclopedia Iconoliga from 1593 was published
in 1625, containing an article on the Fede Cattolica.
The new edition was illustrated by Cavaliere
d'Arpino. These illustrations seem to have served
as a point of reference for the painted decoration
of this bottle, the stylistic debt being particularly
apparent in the rendering of the garment folds.
