Museale, große Majolika-Platte aus der
Werkstatt des Guido Durantino
Durchmesser: 45 cm.
Verso Inschrift "Le diSprezatrice di / Baccho ConueSe
in / piche / 1539 / In Botega de M° Guido / da Castel
durati".
Urbino, 1539.
Die prächtige Bemalung zeigt den Wettstreit der
olympischen Musen und pireischen Musen im
Vordergrund stehend an den zwei Ufern eines
Bachlaufs. Im Hintergrund bewachsene Hügelland -
schaft mit Apoll, Minerva und Nymphen. Im Zen -
trum oben Wappen der Sieneser Familie Petrucci.
Brüche rest. und auf der Vorderseite dezente
Übermalungen, auf der Rückseite Auffüllungen
der Brüche und Fehlerstellen vom Brennen.
Anmerkung:
Nach dem Stich "Der Wettstreit der Musen und
der Pieriden" zu Ovids Metamorphosen von Jacopo
Caraglio nach Rosso Fiorentino.
Die Töchter des Königs Pireus forderten die Musen
zum Gesangs-Wettstreit heraus. Apoll, Minerva
und die Nymphen sollten den Sieger bestimmen.
Zur Strafe, dass sie verloren hatten, wurden die
Töchter des Pireus in Elstern verwandelt.
Die Inschrift "Le disprezatrice di/ Baccho Conue[r]se
in/ piche/ 1539/ In Bot[t]ega de M[aestro] Guido/
da Castel dura[n]ti" lautet übersetzt: "Die Frauen,
die Bacchus verspotteten, verwandelte dieser in
Elstern. 1539. In der Werkstatt des Maestro Guido
von Castel durante".
Die Petruzzi-Familie erlebte einen gewaltigen gesellschaftlichen
Aufstieg in Siena in der Zeit von
1487 - 1525. Da alle männlichen Nachkommen des
großen Mäzens Pandolfo Petruzzi (1452 - 1512)
1529 gestorben waren, muss der Teller einem anderen
Familienzweig zugeordnet werden, dessen
Ursprung bei Bartolomeo di Giacoppo Petrucci
(1408 - 1495) liegt.
Guido Durantinos Sohn, vgl. Julia E. Poole, "Italian
maiolica and incised slipware in the Fitzwilliam
Museum Cambridge", Cambridge, 1995, S. 356f.
Es erscheint sehr gut möglich, dass Orazio auch
den vorliegenden Teller gestaltete. Ein anderer
möglicher Maler könnte Camillo Gatti sein, Guidos
Cousin.
Large, museum-like maiolica dish from the
workshop of Guido Durantino
Diameter: 45 cm.
Reverse inscribed Le diSprezatrice di/Baccho
ConueSe in/piche/1539/In Botega de M° Guido/da
Castel durati.
Urbino, 1539.
The rich painting shows the contest of the Olympic
and Pierian Muses standing in the foreground on
either bank of a stream. In the background lush
rolling hills with Apollo, Minerva and Nymphs. At
top right, the dish bears the crest of the Sienese
Petrucci family. Restored cracks and subtle over -
painting at the front, on the back fillings of the
cracks and pre-firing imperfections are visible.
Notes:
After the engraving of Jacopo Caraglio after Rosso
Fiorentino for Ovid's Metamorphoses 'The Contest
of the Muses and Pierians'. The daughters of King
Pireus challenged the Muses to a singing contest.
Apollo, Minerva and the Nymphs were to choose
the victors. As a punishment for losing, the daugh -
ters of Pireus were transformed into magpies.
The inscription Le disprezatrice di/Baccho Conu -
e[r]se in/ piche/1539/In Bot[t]ega de M[aestro]
Guido/da Castel dura[n]ti translates as: the women
that ridiculed Bacchus were transformed into
magpies by him. 1539. In the workshop of Master
Guido von Castel durante. The Petruzzi family
achieved enormous social advancement in Siena
during the period of 1487 - 1525. As all male descendants
of the great patron Pandolfo Petruzzi
(1452 - 1512) had died in 1529 the dish must be
attributed to a different family line, originating in
Bartolomeo di Giacoppo Petrucci (1408 - 95). A
similarly sized dish can be found in the Fitzwilliam
Museum in Cambridge, with the note 'Maestro
Guido da Casteldurante' on the reverse, but it is
undated and bears no crest. The Schlossmuseum
in Berlin had a similar, now lost, dish with the
signature 'Orazio', Guido Durantino's son, see
Julia E. Poole, Italian maiolica and incised slipware
in the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge. Cambridge,
1995, pp. 356ff. It seems quite possible that Ora -
zio also created this exhibit. Another possible
painter could be Camillo Gatti, Guido's cousin.
