könnte, dass die Marketingstrategen
hier die Klientel des Mitbewerbers
Mini als Zielgruppe im Kopf haben.
Vor allem an seinem zurückhaltenden,
sehr an die Marke angelehnten Design,
werden die neuen Besitzer des Autos
ihre Freude haben. Die zweitürige
Schrägheck-Limousine ist nicht nur auf
der Fahrt in das 280 Kilometer entfernte
Hamburg auf der Autobahn ein
Hingucker.

Der Fahrtkomfort ist – trotz der geringen
Ausmaße des Autos – ausgesprochen
hoch und erinnert vor allem im
Innenraum an die großen Audi-Limousinen.
Hier haben die Techniker an Wenigem
gespart. Auch auf Hamburgs
Innenstadtstraßen, sei es am Neuen
Wall, auf dem Jungfernstieg oder rund
um die Alster, blickt man sich nach dem
Auto um. Dabei will es nicht auff allen
um jeden Preis. Damit treff en das Understatement-Design
von Audi mit der
gelebten Zurückhaltung der Hamburger
zusammen.
Karl Lagerfeld, übrigens auch ein gebürtiger
Hamburger, beschrieb letztere in
einem Interview: „Hamburg ist das Tor
zur Welt, aber eben nur das Tor!“ Das
habe seine Mutter immer gesagt und
damit sehr präzise das Lebensgefühl
des wahren Hamburgers ausgedrückt.
Norddeutsch, sachlich, manchmal fast
zur Kühle neigend, ein wenig skeptisch.
Die Farbe des Hamburgers ist blau, aber
nicht irgendeines, sondern Marineblau.
Und neben dem blauen Anzug des Geschäftsmannes
gehört zur Garderobe
mindestens noch ein blauer Blazer,
auch Clubjackett genannt, mit Goldknöpfen.
„Du kannst,“ sagte mal jemand,
„nördlich von Hannover alles tragen,
es muss nur grau oder blau sein.“
Nicht wenige behaupten unterdes, dass
die Stadt die englischste außerhalb Englands
sei, einige von ihnen sehen in ihr
sogar einen Vorort von London. Schon
zu Zeiten der Hanse pfl egte man gute
Beziehungen untereinander. Im Jahre
1266 gewährte König Heinrich III. den
Hansestädten das Recht, mit England
Handel zu treiben.
The main draw for night owls, however, can be reached just
a few steps away on Hamburg’s 900 metre long Reeperbahn.
The time when only sailors met on this legendarily colourful
mile is a thing of the past; today it attracts the scene crowd
from across the world. With the fi rst rays of dawn revellers start
leaving the pubs on Sunday mornings to hurry to the Fish Market.

advertise their fresh goods in the traditional barkers‘ manner
by throwing bananas and plants into the crowd. Never ending
streams of visitors are also attracted whenever the huge hulk of
an ocean liner enters the port. Every time one of these queens
of the ocean heads into the modern cruise terminal, the Cruise
Centre, in the Hafencity, the surrounding dykes are packed with
onlookers and even more so along Elbpromenaden [Elbe River
Promenades] and around Landungsbrücken [Landing Bridges]
and Baumwall.
Audi launches a new compact car
We set off from Berlin to Hamburg in a car that will certainly
turn out to be especially suited to the big city. Still quite a rarity
on German streets since its offi cial launch, the Audi A1, the
smallest vehicle in the company with the four rings’ stable, was
only introduced onto the market a few weeks ago. It might be
thought that the compact car segment is the traditional preserve
of the Japanese and also the Wolfsburg based VW parent
company.
And now comes this one from the House of Audi, and who
would dare to think that their marketing strategists have the
buyers of their arch competitor, the Mini, in their sights? Its
discreet design, very much following in the brand’s tradition,
will give unbounded pleasure to the owners of this new model.

motorway during our 280 km trip to Hamburg
In spite of its compact size the standard of comfort is surprisingly
high, calling to mind the larger Audi saloons especially
with regard to the interior. Audi’s engineers have only saved on
a few features. So too in Hamburg’s inner city people turned
their heads as we drove past the Neuer Wall, Jungfernstieg and
along the River Alster. However the car does not simply make
a splash at the expense of Audi’s famous image of understatement
and so the quiet discretion of Audi matches the actual
reticence of the local people.
Karl Lagerfeld, born in Hamburg by the way, described the latter in
an interview: “Hamburg is the gateway to the world but a gateway
only,” as his mother used to say, thus expressing very precisely
the attitude of the real natives towards life, Northern German,
sober, at times almost tending to coolness, somewhat sceptical.
The colour of Hamburg is blue, but not just any blue but navy blue.
