3.1 Community <strong>Part</strong>icipation<br />

3.1.1 outreach<br />

<strong>Brawley</strong> business owners, residents, elected <strong>of</strong>ficials, <strong>City</strong> Staff, and local<br />

organization representatives actively participated in a series <strong>of</strong> outreach<br />

activities related to developing the vision for <strong>Downtown</strong> <strong>Brawley</strong>. Outreach<br />

included one-on-one stakeholder interviews, a <strong>Downtown</strong> walking tour,<br />

community workshops, a joint study session with <strong>Plan</strong>ning Commission and<br />

<strong>City</strong> Council members, and the use <strong>of</strong> comment cards.<br />

A great deal <strong>of</strong> feedback was received from <strong>Downtown</strong> stakeholders during<br />

Community Workshop No. 1, which integrated a Post-It-Note Visioning<br />

Exercise (i.e. treasures, challenges and visions), Visual Design Preference<br />

Survey using electronic handheld voting devices, and Small Group Vision <strong>Plan</strong>s<br />

during which each workshop participant was given an opportunity to map out<br />

and present their ideas related to land uses, public gathering plazas, “sense <strong>of</strong><br />

place” design features, etc.<br />

3.1.2 Vision statement<br />

In addition to integrating stakeholders’ comments on the vision plan, the<br />

community’s ideas were used in preparing the community-supported vision<br />

statement located on the section cover <strong>of</strong> this Chapter.
