Background<br />

Ken: <strong>The</strong>re was no particular reason for using<br />

“Elihu Root” here, except the pun (getting back<br />

to one’s roots). I was looking for the name <strong>of</strong> a<br />

person in US history who was a power behind<br />

a politician, in this case President <strong>The</strong>odore<br />

Roosevelt.<br />

Ivan Pavlov conducted experiments which<br />

dealt with conditioning dogs’ behaviour to<br />

salivate at the sound <strong>of</strong> a ringing bell and thus<br />

the expectation <strong>of</strong> food. <strong>The</strong> use <strong>of</strong> sound can<br />

also train humans – an angry or kindly voice,<br />

loud noises, music, etc. Pavlov’s ideas played a<br />

large role in the Behaviourist theory <strong>of</strong> human<br />

psychology.<br />
