Chapter 3: Lum<strong>in</strong>osity <strong>Measurement</strong> at <strong>the</strong> LHC and <strong>in</strong> ATLAS 93<br />

tector [99]), <strong>the</strong> mean number <strong>of</strong> vertices per bunch <strong>cross</strong><strong>in</strong>g can be used to estimate<br />

bunch-by-bunch lum<strong>in</strong>osity [79].<br />

Resonance count<strong>in</strong>g: The number <strong>of</strong> resonances <strong>of</strong> a specific type produced <strong>in</strong><br />

a run can be used as an estimate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> relative <strong>in</strong>tegrated lum<strong>in</strong>osity <strong>in</strong> that run.<br />

Potentially useful physics processes <strong>in</strong>clude J/ψ, W , and Z (see Chapter 1). Decay<br />

modes <strong>in</strong>to electrons and muons are optimal for this purpose s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>y are relatively<br />

easy to isolate from <strong>the</strong> background.<br />

3.3.5 Summary<br />

Accurate measurement <strong>of</strong> absolute lum<strong>in</strong>osity is go<strong>in</strong>g to be crucial for <strong>cross</strong>-<br />

<strong>section</strong> estimations at <strong>the</strong> LHC. In this chapter, we have reviewed <strong>the</strong> various meth-<br />

ods by which lum<strong>in</strong>osity can be measured. We have summarized <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical<br />

underp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> lum<strong>in</strong>osity measurement from mach<strong>in</strong>e parameters, and discussed<br />

<strong>the</strong> technologies and <strong>the</strong> current status <strong>of</strong> LHC beam monitor<strong>in</strong>g systems which are<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g used to measure <strong>the</strong> relevant parameters. We have also given estimates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

accuracy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se monitors.<br />

We have presented an overview <strong>of</strong> several ATLAS subdetectors that contribute to<br />

<strong>the</strong> measurement <strong>of</strong> both <strong>in</strong>stantaneous and <strong>in</strong>tegrated lum<strong>in</strong>osity. For each subsys-<br />

tem, we have discussed <strong>the</strong> basic concepts and <strong>the</strong> expected measurement accuracy.<br />

Additionally, we have given brief overviews <strong>of</strong> several methods <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fl<strong>in</strong>e lum<strong>in</strong>osity<br />

monitor<strong>in</strong>g.
