Lum<strong>in</strong>osity <strong>Measurement</strong> at <strong>the</strong><br />

LHC and <strong>in</strong> ATLAS<br />

For a physics process p, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stantaneous lum<strong>in</strong>osity L is <strong>the</strong> proportionality<br />

factor between <strong>the</strong> event rate dRP<br />

dt and <strong>the</strong> <strong>cross</strong>-<strong>section</strong> σP :<br />

dRP<br />

dt = LσP (3.1)<br />

The <strong>in</strong>tegral L<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stantaneous lum<strong>in</strong>osity with respect to time is an estimate <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> total amount <strong>of</strong> ‘data’ <strong>in</strong> a given run or set <strong>of</strong> runs. Knowledge <strong>of</strong> L<strong>in</strong>t is <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

vital for measur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>cross</strong>-<strong>section</strong>s <strong>of</strong> physics processes. The uncerta<strong>in</strong>ty <strong>in</strong> L<strong>in</strong>t<br />

is <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>the</strong> dom<strong>in</strong>ant source <strong>of</strong> uncerta<strong>in</strong>ty <strong>in</strong> such measurements and, <strong>the</strong>refore,<br />

<strong>the</strong> accurate determ<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrated lum<strong>in</strong>osity is <strong>of</strong> prime importance <strong>in</strong> any<br />

high-energy physics experiment.<br />

A number <strong>of</strong> methods exist for determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> lum<strong>in</strong>osity at hadron colliders.<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g are rout<strong>in</strong>ely used:<br />

• parameters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> collid<strong>in</strong>g beams<br />

• purpose-built detector systems <strong>in</strong>tegrated with <strong>the</strong> experiments<br />
