Chapter 4: Data Collection and Event Reconstruction 97<br />

<strong>the</strong> muon spectrometer (MS), but <strong>the</strong> basic strategy is to convert ADC/TDC counts<br />

<strong>in</strong>to energy, time and/or distance estimates. The reconstruction s<strong>of</strong>tware is part<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ATLAS <strong>of</strong>fl<strong>in</strong>e s<strong>of</strong>tware framework, known as A<strong>the</strong>na. The raw data <strong>in</strong>put<br />

to <strong>the</strong> reconstruction cha<strong>in</strong> is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> so-called bytestream format. The output <strong>of</strong><br />

reconstruction are Event Summary Data (ESD) and Analysis Object Data (AOD)<br />

files.<br />

The ESD conta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> detailed output <strong>of</strong> reconstruction, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g sufficient <strong>in</strong>-<br />

formation to enable jet calibration, track re-fitt<strong>in</strong>g etc. (discussed below). It has<br />

been designed to allow quick tun<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> reconstruction algorithms and extraction <strong>of</strong><br />

calibration constants. The AOD conta<strong>in</strong>s a summary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reconstructed event, <strong>in</strong>-<br />

clud<strong>in</strong>g all physics objects <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> event as well as event-level metadata 1 . AODs can<br />

be produced from ESDs. Our analysis used collections <strong>of</strong> variables extracted from<br />

ESDs or AODs, known as D3PDs, that allow efficient, CPU-economic access to data.<br />

4.2.1 Reconstruction <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Inner Detector<br />

Inner detector reconstruction <strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>the</strong> reconstruction <strong>of</strong> tracks, vertices, <strong>the</strong><br />

beaml<strong>in</strong>e, and electron bremsstrahlung recovery. Track reconstruction <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner<br />

detector has three ma<strong>in</strong> components: <strong>the</strong> primary <strong>in</strong>side-out reconstruction, <strong>the</strong> sub-<br />

sequent outside-<strong>in</strong> reconstruction, and a f<strong>in</strong>al TRT-only reconstruction. The various<br />

steps <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> each will be briefly described below.<br />

1 Event metadata consists <strong>of</strong> such <strong>in</strong>formation as <strong>the</strong> run and lum<strong>in</strong>osity block <strong>the</strong> event belongs<br />

to, <strong>the</strong> bunch <strong>cross</strong><strong>in</strong>g which produced it etc.
