at <strong>the</strong> LHC can help constra<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. We briefly describe <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r improvements<br />

that will be needed to reduce <strong>the</strong> overall <strong>the</strong>oretical error to <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> a percent.<br />

1.5.1 Sources <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical errors<br />

QCD corrections: QCD calculations to NLO accuracy have been available for<br />

a long time. The event generator MC@NLO [84], for example, comb<strong>in</strong>es NLO QCD<br />

matrix elements with <strong>the</strong> HERWIG [46] parton shower algorithm. The fixed-order<br />

matrix element calculation gives a good description <strong>of</strong> processes where <strong>the</strong> partons are<br />

energetic and widely separated, while parton showers provide an excellent description<br />

<strong>of</strong> processes dom<strong>in</strong>ated by s<strong>of</strong>t and coll<strong>in</strong>ear gluon emission. A tool that comb<strong>in</strong>es<br />

both types <strong>of</strong> calculation is <strong>the</strong>refore very useful.<br />

MC@NLO calculates W/Z <strong>boson</strong> production <strong>cross</strong>-<strong>section</strong>s <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g γ − Z <strong>in</strong>-<br />

terference as well as sp<strong>in</strong> correlations among leptonic decay products. It can be<br />

<strong>in</strong>terfaced with a particular detector simulation. For example, it has been <strong>in</strong>terfaced<br />

with <strong>the</strong> ATLAS simulation via <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>na comput<strong>in</strong>g framework.<br />

Recently, NNLO QCD calculations have become available for some processes.<br />

The program FEWZ [67] calculates W/Z production <strong>cross</strong>-<strong>section</strong>s through NNLO<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>ite-width effects, γ − Z <strong>in</strong>terference and sp<strong>in</strong> correlations. The program<br />

ResBos [19] resums s<strong>of</strong>t and coll<strong>in</strong>ear <strong>in</strong>itial-state gluon emission to all orders, giv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

an accurate description <strong>of</strong> processes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> low-pT regime. It can also (optionally)<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude <strong>in</strong>itial-state NLO corrections. Both <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se programs use VEGAS [72] for<br />

evaluat<strong>in</strong>g phase-space <strong>in</strong>tegrals.<br />

The authors <strong>of</strong> [75] recently studied <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical uncerta<strong>in</strong>ties <strong>in</strong> W/Z <strong>cross</strong>-
