Chapter 2: The Accelerator and <strong>the</strong> Experiment 55<br />

Figure 2.10: Schematic <strong>of</strong> a drift tube <strong>in</strong> <strong>cross</strong>-<strong>section</strong>. The process <strong>of</strong> electron-ion<br />

pair formation by a pass<strong>in</strong>g muon is shown. The dashed circle <strong>in</strong>dicates <strong>the</strong> drift<br />

electrodes <strong>in</strong> each plane. By comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation from adjacent cathode strips, <strong>the</strong><br />

µ<br />

position <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> track can be determ<strong>in</strong>ed with high accuracy.<br />

Strips <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> two cathode planes <strong>in</strong> a CSC chamber are arranged perpendicular to<br />

each o<strong>the</strong>r, such that both radial and azimuthal coord<strong>in</strong>ates can be measured. The<br />

spatial resolution <strong>of</strong> a chamber is ≈ 40 µm <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> radial (bend<strong>in</strong>g) direction and ≈ 5<br />

mm <strong>in</strong> φ. The CSCs also have an excellent time resolution <strong>of</strong> 7 ns. The total number<br />

<strong>of</strong> CSC channels is 30,700.<br />

Trigger technologies<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> requirements on <strong>the</strong> muon trigger system are fourfold:<br />

• It must be able to roughly estimate <strong>the</strong> momentum <strong>of</strong> a track with<strong>in</strong> a few tens<br />

<strong>of</strong> nanoseconds after its passage. This requires fast signal generation and a f<strong>in</strong>e
