Chapter 3: Lum<strong>in</strong>osity <strong>Measurement</strong> at <strong>the</strong> LHC and <strong>in</strong> ATLAS 82<br />

A total <strong>of</strong> 1058 BPMs are used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> LHC r<strong>in</strong>g: 922 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> arcs and beam<br />

dispersion suppressors, 68 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>teraction regions, 44 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> beam cleaners at IP3<br />

and IP7, and 24 special BPMs for transverse damp<strong>in</strong>g and tune and chromaticity<br />

measurements at IP4. In addition, <strong>the</strong> beam transfer l<strong>in</strong>es from <strong>the</strong> SPS to <strong>the</strong> LHC<br />

conta<strong>in</strong> 100 BPMs.<br />

3.2.5 The BRAN detectors for relative lum<strong>in</strong>osity measurement<br />

The BRAN (Beam RAte Neutrals) detectors are relative lum<strong>in</strong>osity monitors <strong>in</strong>-<br />

stalled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> four LHC collision po<strong>in</strong>ts (IP1, IP2, IP5 and IP8). They reside <strong>in</strong>side<br />

<strong>the</strong> TAN (Target Absorber Neutrals) on each side <strong>of</strong> a collision po<strong>in</strong>t. Figure 3.9<br />

shows <strong>the</strong> layout <strong>of</strong> a collision po<strong>in</strong>t and <strong>the</strong> location <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> BRAN monitors.<br />

Figure 3.9: Layout <strong>of</strong> Interaction Po<strong>in</strong>t 5 (CMS), show<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> TAN absorbers and<br />

signals <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> BRAN monitors (not to scale).<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> BRAN monitors is to provide a relative lum<strong>in</strong>osity estimate<br />

for mach<strong>in</strong>e optimization, not for use by <strong>the</strong> experiments to calculate physics <strong>cross</strong>-
