Q. Who must receive prevailing ages on public works projects?<br />

A. The prevailing wage must be paid to all workers on public works projects, including<br />

partners who are performing the work.<br />

Q. What is the penalty for not paying the prevailing wage?<br />

A. This is defined in <strong>Labor</strong> Code Section 1775.<br />

Q. How often are Certified Payroll Records due and who should receive them?<br />

A. Certified Payroll Records should be sent each week to the awarding body or their their 3 rd<br />

party LCP.<br />

Q. As a contractor or subcontractor when should I hire and train apprentices?<br />

A. When employing workers in an apprenticeable craft or trade, the contractor or subcontractor<br />

must apply to the appropriate joint apprenticeship committee for certification to employ and<br />

train apprentices in the affected industry. Contractors not signatory to a trust agreement<br />

shall contribute a training fee to the California Apprenticeship Council for each hour<br />

worked on the project. Awards of less than thirty thousand dollars or 20 working days are<br />

exempt from this provision.<br />

Q. How do I know what is the correct prevailing wage rate?<br />

A. The current prevailing wage rates are available on the internet at:<br />

http://www.dir.ca.gov/DLSR/PWD<br />

A copy is available from the contracting department.<br />

Copies of all wage determinations are also available from:<br />

Division of <strong>Labor</strong> Statistics and Research<br />

Q. How do I know what is the correct craft or classification for the work my employees<br />

are doing?<br />

A. The Scope of Work for each craft is listed on the DIR website and on some of the wage<br />

determinations. If you have questions about the type of work that many be performed by<br />
