In 1985, AAAS founded Project 2061 with the go<strong>al</strong> of helping <strong>al</strong>l Americans become literate in science, mathematics, and<br />

technology. Withits landmarkpublications Science for All Americans and Benchmarks for Science Literacy,Project 2061 s<strong>et</strong> out<br />

recommendations forwhat <strong>al</strong>l students should know andbe able to do in science, mathematics,and technology bythe time they<br />

graduatefrom high school. Today, many of the state standards in the UnitedStates have drawn their content from Project 2061.<br />

Every day Project 2061 staff use their expertise asteachers, researchers,and scientists toev<strong>al</strong>uate textbooks andassessments,<br />

create conceptu<strong>al</strong> strand maps for educators, produce groundbreaking research and innovative books, CD-ROMs, and profession<strong>al</strong><br />

developmentworkshops for educators,<strong>al</strong>l in the service of achieving our go<strong>al</strong> of univers<strong>al</strong> science literacy.<br />
