can occur with any of these products.<br />

Prolonged use of antibiotics in the ear predisposes the dog to development<br />

of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections and the overgrowth of yeast and<br />

fungi. When bacterial and fungal cultures are needed, your dog must be off<br />

antibiotics for at least three days.<br />

The Ear Flap<br />

The ear flap, or pinna, is a sheet of cartilage covered on both sides by a layer<br />

of skin and hair. The pinna is often involved in diseases as part of a generalized<br />

process, especially in the case of allergic and autoimmune skin diseases, as<br />

discussed in chapter 4.<br />

To apply ear medication, fold the ear flap over the top of the dog’s head and insert<br />

the tip of the applicator into the canal only as far as you can see.<br />

It is not uncommon for the pinna to be injured during fights with other<br />

animals.
