James M. Giffin, MD<br />

Jim Giffin graduated from Amherst<br />

College and received his medical<br />

degree from Yale University School of<br />

Medicine. After years of private surgery<br />

practice in Missouri and<br />

Colorado, Dr. Giffin was activated<br />

during Operation Desert Storm, serving<br />

as Chief of Surgery at military hospitals<br />

in Alabama, Korea, and Texas.<br />

Dr. Giffin had lifelong experience<br />

with cats, dogs, and horses. In 1969 he<br />

established a Great Pyrenees kennel<br />

and became active in breeding, showing,<br />

and judging. He finished several<br />

champions, campaigned a Best-in-<br />

Show winner, and served on the board<br />

of directors of the Great Pyrenees<br />

Club of America. He is co-author of the award winning books The Complete<br />

Great Pyrenees, Cat Owner’s <strong>Home</strong> <strong>Veterinary</strong> <strong>Handbook</strong>, Horse Owner’s<br />

<strong>Veterinary</strong> <strong>Handbook</strong>, and <strong>Veterinary</strong> Guide to Horse Breeding, and was a professional<br />

member of the <strong>Dog</strong> Writers’ Association of America.<br />

Until his death in 2000, he made his home in Colorado.<br />

Sandra Young, DVM, graduated with distinction from the New York State<br />

College of <strong>Veterinary</strong> Medicine at Cornell University. Since then, she has<br />

worked primarily with dogs and cats in small animal practice, but also with<br />

zoo, wildlife, and exotic species, and in shelter medicine. She has been in<br />

practice 14 years. She is certified in veterinary acupuncture and has additional<br />

training in Western and Chinese herbal medicine. She is co-author of<br />

The Eden Alternative: Animal Welfare Guidelines, an animal care manual for<br />

long-term care facilities for humans that incorporate live-in animals. Dr.<br />

Young shares her life with her husband, Rodger, their two sons, Evan and<br />

Alex, and a Greyhound.
