Unfortunately nobody formulated a good and clear definition for pelvic instability. What has
been formulated, is a definition of joint stability in a functional way. This is described as
follows:
"The effective accommodation of the joints to each specific load demand through an
adequately tailored joint compression, as a function of gravity, coordinated muscle and
ligament forces, to produce effective joint reaction forces under changing condition“.
Van de Pol et al use the term pelvic instability, however here the desription of pelvic
instability indicates only the region of the pain.(Van De Pol et al. 2007)
Summarizing
Before 2008, regarding pelvic pain and pelvic instability, there was no clear distinguishing
definition available. Many studies were done without being able to specify pelvic pain or
pelvic instability. So in each study a different aspect or disease might be investigated. Since
2008, there is now a clear definition for pelvic girdle pain described in the European
guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic girdle pain. However there is no clear
definition for pelvic instability.
2.2.3 Diagnostic methods
Within the diagnostic methods it is striking that 19, of the 23 studies in this schedule, are
using a questionnaire. In 3 studies, this questionnaire is completed by a physiotherapist. In
the other the questionnaire is completed by the client. The are four studies where no use is
made of a questionnaire but interviews.
Physical examination is performed in 4 studies. Berg et al. examines only the severely
affected women.(Bastiaanssen, de Bie, Bastiaenen, Essed, et al. 2005) Albert et al. (in both
studies) and Larsen et al. perform a physical examination by the entire
population.(Bastiaanssen, de Bie, Bastiaenen, Essed, et al. 2005; Albert et al. 2002; Larsen
et al. 1999)
2.2.4 Period of pain measurement
It has been observed that there is a large variation in the period of measurement of the pain.
As well from during pregnancy to 24 months after pregnancy. There are also studies in
Osteopathie Schule Deutschland
