Also important to highlight is that moment of measurement of the test will affect the
perception of the symptoms. In this study it is choosen to do all tests within the period of
measurement.
The period of measurement must be very well framed, as it is to be expected that the body
of the mother starts to recover after the birth. It is however unknown in what timeframe this
all takes place. Therefore, it is important to determine a frame in the post-natal period at
which the examination should take place. In the to be described study the period frame is a
set from 3 weeks up to 12 weeks post natal.
The goal is to create a clear view of the prevalence of pelvic instability for women 3-12
weeks postnatal.
2.3. Research to determine pelvic instability
To determine pelvic instability, there are several testing methods. The various test methods
are reviewed in following paragraphs.
2.3.1 Imaging
There Images of the pelvis as for example; X-ray, computerized tomography (CT) and
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). (Buyruk et al. 1999)
- During the X-ray diagnostics the method of Chamberlain can be used. Here the client
stands on a narrow bench, alternately on the right or left leg. The other leg, just hangs
down next to the bench or in supine position alternately raise the extended left or right
leg 20 cm above the bench.(J. M. A. Mens et al. 1999) The assessment here is as
follows: the vertical displacement of the pubic symfysis reflects the motion in the
sacroiliac joints. (Jan M A Mens & Annelies Pool-Goudzwaard 2009)
- Another Imaging method is the Doppler imaging method. This technique measures the
stiffness in the SI joint by comparing the intensity of the vibrations between the iliac
bones and sacrum. The vibrations come from an external device: the vibrator. The
intensity is measured by means of Colour Doppler Imaging. This method is called the
Doppler Imaging Vibrations. (Buyruk et al. 1999)
