2.3.2 Clinical tests
These are divided into: palpation test, pain provocation tests, strength tests, functional tests
and mobility tests.
- Palpation tests:
Here in particular, the long dorsal ligament of the SI joint is tested on pressure soreness.
Provocation tests:
Most used is the Östgaards P4 test. Here the pain is provoked by bringing the leg in 90
degrees hip flexion and then put a dorsal pressure on the leg.
Further usefull pain provocation tests are (van der Wurff et al. 2000):
The “gapping” or “distraction” -test of the SI joint
The “compression” -test thigh thrust
Gaenslen’s test
Patrick’s sign test.
- Mobility tests:
Usefull tests here are (van der Wurff et al. 2000):
Gillet-Liekens test
Spine test
- Strength test:
The strength of adduction of the leg by Mens et al. has been proven to be a highly reliable
and valid test to measure disease severity in pelvic instability. The reduction in power of the
adduction applies as for the other leg muscle strength testing, that the this is caused by the
inability to use the hip muscles rather than by weakness of the muscles. (J Mens et al.
2002a)
- Functional tests:
The ASLR test is a functional test which tests the transfer of the forces in the pelvis. It is a
functional test because the transfer of forces is the real function of the pelvis during general
daily life of a person. (Jan Mens 2009)
