PRELIMINARY DISSERTATION.<br />

Not<strong>with</strong>st<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> researches <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> learned to trace <strong>the</strong> origin<br />

<strong>of</strong> nations <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong> descent <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> progress <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> different br<strong>an</strong>ches <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

great hum<strong>an</strong> family, as found at tlie dawn <strong>of</strong> <strong>history</strong>, it must be con-<br />

fessed that <strong>the</strong> result has been far from satisfactory, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> that m<strong>an</strong>y <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> systems which have been proposed are built upon <strong>the</strong> most gratui-<br />

tous <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> chimerical hypo<strong>the</strong>ses. By a comparison <strong>of</strong> l<strong>an</strong>guages, how-<br />

ever, considerable light has been thrown upon <strong>the</strong> affinities <strong>of</strong> nations<br />

but beyond <strong>the</strong>se philological investigations, every thing becomes vague<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> uncertain.<br />

Some modern writers, particularly amongst <strong>the</strong> Germ<strong>an</strong>s, <strong>with</strong> that<br />

unfortunate latitudinari<strong>an</strong>i-jm <strong>of</strong> interpretation which distinguishes <strong>the</strong> dis<br />

ciples <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> neologi<strong>an</strong> school, consider <strong>the</strong> deluge as having been confin-<br />

ed to a small portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> globe ; <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> upon this gratuitous hypo<strong>the</strong>sis<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have raised <strong>the</strong> most incongruous systems. Kiaproth, although he<br />

very properly disclaims <strong>the</strong> intention <strong>of</strong> deriving all l<strong>an</strong>guages from one<br />

primitive tongue, never<strong>the</strong>less makes <strong>the</strong> following extraordinary observa-<br />

" The wide dispersion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indo-Germ<strong>an</strong>ic* race took place pro-<br />

tions :<br />

bably before <strong>the</strong> flood <strong>of</strong> Noah : besides, it is <strong>the</strong> only Asiatic one which<br />

appears to have descended, after that event, from two high mountains,<br />

namely, from <strong>the</strong> Himalaya into India <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Middle Asia, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> on <strong>the</strong><br />

west from <strong>the</strong> Kaukasus into Asia Minor <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Europe. In India this<br />

race mixed itself much <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> dark-coloured aborigines, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>, though<br />

its speech predominated, its physical characteristics were deteriorated,<br />

as has ever been <strong>the</strong> case when a mixture has taken place between<br />

a white <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> black, or brown race ; when <strong>the</strong> physical qualities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

latter, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong> moral qualities <strong>of</strong> each undergo <strong>an</strong> inevitable ch<strong>an</strong>ge.<br />

• Indi<strong>an</strong>s, Persi<strong>an</strong>s, Afgh<strong>an</strong>s, Kurds, Medes, Ossetes, Armeni<strong>an</strong>s, Sclavcni<strong>an</strong>s, Germ<strong>an</strong>s,<br />

Swedes, D<strong>an</strong>es, Norwegi<strong>an</strong>s, English, Greeks, Rom<strong>an</strong>s, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> all <strong>the</strong> people who<br />

sper.k a l<strong>an</strong>guage derived from Latin, are reckoned by Klnpruth as Indo-Germ<strong>an</strong>ic.<br />
