to Lord Berridale for governing Caithness peaceably in time coming<br />

conformably to <strong>the</strong> laws <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kingdom, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> for preventing <strong>the</strong> earl <strong>of</strong><br />

Caithness from again disturbing <strong>the</strong> countrj' should he venture to return<br />

after <strong>the</strong> departure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> army. At Wick Sir Robert Gordon was<br />

joined by Sir Donald Mackay, who had collected toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> choicest<br />

men <strong>of</strong> Strathnaver; but, as <strong>the</strong> object <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> expedition had been obtained,<br />

Sir Donald, after receiving Sir Robert's th<strong>an</strong>ks, returned <strong>the</strong> same<br />

day to Strathnaver. Sir Robert h<strong>an</strong>ng brought this expedition to a suc-<br />

cessful termination, led back his men into Su<strong>the</strong>rl<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>, after a stay<br />

<strong>of</strong> three months went to Engl<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>, carrjing <strong>with</strong> liiui a letter from <strong>the</strong><br />

privy council <strong>of</strong> Scotl<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> to <strong>the</strong> king, giving <strong>an</strong> account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> e:ipe-<br />

dition, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>of</strong> its happy result.*<br />
