Such were some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leading characteristics <strong>of</strong> this fine <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> cele-<br />

brated race <strong>of</strong> people, who preserved m<strong>an</strong>y <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir national peculiarities<br />

till a comparatively recent period. These, however, are now fast dis-<br />

appearing amidst <strong>the</strong> march <strong>of</strong> modern improvement <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> civilization,<br />

aiid we are sorry to add that <strong>the</strong> vices wliich seem almost inseparable<br />

from this new state <strong>of</strong> society, have found <strong>the</strong>ir way into <strong>the</strong> Highlauds,<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> suppl<strong>an</strong>ted, in some degree, m;uiy <strong>of</strong> those shining virtues whicL<br />

aere once <strong>the</strong> glory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> GaoL
