me<strong>an</strong> to take me to Edinburgh, whe<strong>the</strong>r I will or not. Tliis conduct,<br />

on your part, seems to me to be nei<strong>the</strong>r fair nor honourable." He added,<br />

" My lord, give me back <strong>the</strong> bond which I gave you at Inverury, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong><br />

you shall have <strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>swer." Montrose <strong>the</strong>reupon ilelivcrcd <strong>the</strong> bond to<br />

<strong>the</strong> marquis. Huntly <strong>the</strong>n inquired at <strong>the</strong> earl, " Whe<strong>the</strong>r he would<br />

take him to <strong>the</strong> south as a captive, or willingK- <strong>of</strong> his own mind?"<br />

" Make j'our choice," said Montrose. " Then," observed <strong>the</strong> marquis,<br />

" I will not go as a captive, but as a volunteer." The marquis <strong>the</strong>re-<br />

upon immediately returned to his lodging, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> despatched a messenger<br />

after <strong>the</strong> laird <strong>of</strong> Cluny, to stop him on his journey.*<br />

It was <strong>the</strong> intention <strong>of</strong> Montrose to take both <strong>the</strong> marquis <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> his<br />

Bons to Edinburgh, but Viscount Aboyne, at <strong>the</strong> desire <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> his<br />

friends, was released, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> allowed to return to Strathbogie. On arriv-<br />

ing at Edinburgh, <strong>the</strong> marquis <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> his son. Lord Gordon, were com-<br />

mitted close prisoners to <strong>the</strong> castle <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tables " ap-<br />

pointed five guardi<strong>an</strong>s to attend upon him <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> his son night <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> day,<br />

upon his own expenses, that none should come in nor out but by <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

sight." f<br />

Some time after <strong>the</strong> departure <strong>of</strong> Montrose's army to <strong>the</strong> south, <strong>the</strong><br />

coven<strong>an</strong>ters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> north appointed a committee meeting to be held at<br />

Turriff, upon Wednesday, <strong>the</strong> twenty-fourth <strong>of</strong> April, consisting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Earls Marshal <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Seaforth, <strong>the</strong> Lord Fraser, tlie Master <strong>of</strong> Forbes,<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir kindred <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> friends. All persons <strong>with</strong>in <strong>the</strong> diocese,<br />

who had not subscribed <strong>the</strong> coven<strong>an</strong>t, were required to attend this<br />

meeting for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> signing it, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> failing compli<strong>an</strong>ce, <strong>the</strong>ir propertj-<br />

was to be given up to indiscriminate plunder. As nei<strong>the</strong>r Lord<br />

Aboyne, <strong>the</strong> laird <strong>of</strong> B<strong>an</strong>ff, nor <strong>an</strong>y <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir friends <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> kinsmen, had<br />

subscribed <strong>the</strong> coven<strong>an</strong>t, nor me<strong>an</strong>t to do so, <strong>the</strong>y resolved to protect<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves from <strong>the</strong> threatened attack. A preliminary meeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

heads <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn coven<strong>an</strong>ters was held on <strong>the</strong> twenty-second day<br />

<strong>of</strong> April, at Monymusk, where <strong>the</strong>y learned <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rising <strong>of</strong> Lord<br />

Aboyne <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> his friends. This intelligence induced <strong>the</strong>m to postpone <strong>the</strong><br />

meeting at Turrifl' till <strong>the</strong> twenty-sixth <strong>of</strong> April, by which day <strong>the</strong>y ex-<br />

pected to be joined by several gentlemen from Caithness, Su<strong>the</strong>rl<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>,<br />

Ross, Moray, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r quarters. At <strong>an</strong>o<strong>the</strong>r meeting, held by <strong>the</strong> same<br />

parties at Kintore, on <strong>the</strong> twenty-fourth <strong>of</strong> April, tliey postponed <strong>the</strong><br />

proposed meeting at Turriff, sine die, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> adjourned to Aberdeen ; but<br />

as no notice had been sent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> postponement to <strong>the</strong> different cove-<br />

n<strong>an</strong>ting districts in <strong>the</strong> north, about 1500 men assembled at <strong>the</strong><br />

|)lace <strong>of</strong> meeting on <strong>the</strong> twenty-sixth <strong>of</strong> April, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> were quite asto-<br />

nished to find that <strong>the</strong> chiefs were absent. Upon <strong>an</strong> expl<strong>an</strong>ation taking<br />

place, <strong>the</strong> meeting was adjourned till <strong>the</strong> twentieth <strong>of</strong> May.<br />
