zUD AMONG THE GKAKTS. 295<br />

These freebooters made no distinction between friends <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> foes, but<br />

attacked all persons <strong>of</strong> whatever deseription, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> wasted <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> despoiled<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir property. James Gr<strong>an</strong>t <strong>of</strong> Dalnebo, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family <strong>of</strong> Balin-<br />

dalloch, fell a victim to <strong>the</strong>ir fury, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> m<strong>an</strong>y <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kinsmen <strong>of</strong> that<br />

family, sutlered greatly from <strong>the</strong> depredations committed by Gr<strong>an</strong>t <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong><br />

his associates. The earl <strong>of</strong> Moray, under <strong>the</strong> renewed <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> extended<br />

commission which he had obtained from King Charles, made various<br />

attempts to put <strong>an</strong> end to <strong>the</strong>se lawless proceedings, but to no purpose ;<br />

tlie failure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se attempts served only to harden James Gr<strong>an</strong>t <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> his<br />

party, who continued <strong>the</strong>ir depredations. As John Gr<strong>an</strong>t <strong>of</strong> Carron,<br />

nephew <strong>of</strong> James Gr<strong>an</strong>t, was supposed to maintain <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> assist his uncle<br />

secretly, a suspicion for which <strong>the</strong>re seems to have been no foundation,<br />

John Gr<strong>an</strong>t <strong>of</strong> Balindalloch sought for <strong>an</strong> ojjportunity <strong>of</strong> revenging<br />

himself upon Carron, who was a promising young m<strong>an</strong>. Carron having<br />

one day left his liouse along <strong>with</strong> one Alex<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>er Gr<strong>an</strong>t <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> seven or eight<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r persons to cut down some timber in <strong>the</strong> woods <strong>of</strong> Abernethie<br />

Balindalloch, thinking <strong>the</strong> occasion favourable for putting his design<br />

into execution, collected sixteen <strong>of</strong> his friends, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> having armed <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

went to <strong>the</strong> forest where Carron was, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>, under <strong>the</strong> pretence <strong>of</strong> search-<br />

ing for James Gr<strong>an</strong>t <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> some <strong>of</strong> his associates against whom he had a<br />

commission, attacked Carron, w!io fought m<strong>an</strong>fully in defence <strong>of</strong> his life,<br />

but being overpowered, he was killed by Balindalloch. Before Carron<br />

fell, however, he <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Alex<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>er Gr<strong>an</strong>t had slain several <strong>of</strong> Balindal-<br />

loeh's friends, among whom were Thomas Gr<strong>an</strong>t <strong>of</strong> Davey <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Lauchl<strong>an</strong><br />

Mackintosh <strong>of</strong> Rockinoyr. Alex<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>er Gr<strong>an</strong>t afterwards <strong>an</strong>noyed<br />

Balindalloch <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> killed several <strong>of</strong> his men, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> assisted James Gr<strong>an</strong>t to<br />

lay waste Balindalloch's l<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>s. " Give me leave heir (says Sir R. Gor-<br />

don), to remark <strong>the</strong> providence <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> seerait judgement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Almightie<br />

God, who now hath mott Carron <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> same measure that his fore-<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r, John Roy Gr<strong>an</strong>t <strong>of</strong> Carron, did serve <strong>the</strong> <strong>an</strong>cestour <strong>of</strong> Ballcn-<br />

dallogh ; for upon <strong>the</strong> same day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> moueth that John Roy Gr<strong>an</strong>t<br />

did kill <strong>the</strong> great gr<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Ballendalloch (being <strong>the</strong> eleventh day<br />

<strong>of</strong> September), <strong>the</strong> verie same day <strong>of</strong> this month wes Carron slain by<br />

this John Gr<strong>an</strong>t <strong>of</strong> Ballendallogh m<strong>an</strong>y yeirs <strong>the</strong>reafter. And, besides,<br />

as that John Roy Gr<strong>an</strong>t <strong>of</strong> Carron was left-h<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ed, so is this John<br />

Gr<strong>an</strong>t <strong>of</strong> Ballendallogh left-h<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ed also ; <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> moreover, it is to be observed<br />

that Ballendallogh, at <strong>the</strong> killing <strong>of</strong> this Carron, had upon him<br />

<strong>the</strong> same coat-<strong>of</strong>-armour, or maillie-coat, v.'hich John Roy Gr<strong>an</strong>t had<br />

upon him at <strong>the</strong> slaughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great-gr<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> this Ballendal-<br />

logh, which maillie-coat Ballendallogh had, a little befor this tyrae,<br />

taken from James Gr<strong>an</strong>t, in a skirmish that passed betwixt <strong>the</strong>m. Thus<br />

wee doe sie that <strong>the</strong> judgements <strong>of</strong> God are inscrutable, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> that, in<br />

his own tj-me, he punisheth blood by blood." *<br />

The carl <strong>of</strong> Moray when he heard <strong>of</strong> this occurrence, instead <strong>of</strong><br />
