In <strong>the</strong> early part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year sixteen hundred <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> two, <strong>the</strong> west <strong>of</strong> Scot-<br />

l<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> was thrown into a state <strong>of</strong> combustion, in consequence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> re-<br />

newal <strong>of</strong> some old quarrels between Colquhoun <strong>of</strong> Luss, <strong>the</strong> chief<br />

<strong>of</strong> that surname, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Alex<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>er Macgregor chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cl<strong>an</strong>-Gregor.<br />

Aggressions had formerly been committed on both sides ; first by Luss<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Lis party against some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Macgregors, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> <strong>the</strong>n by John Mac-<br />

gregor, <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Alex<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>er, against <strong>the</strong> laird <strong>of</strong> Luss <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> his de-<br />

pend<strong>an</strong>ts <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> ten<strong>an</strong>ts. To put <strong>an</strong> end to <strong>the</strong>se dissensions, Alex<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>er<br />

Macgregor leit K<strong>an</strong>noch, accomp<strong>an</strong>ied by about two hundred <strong>of</strong> his<br />

kinsmen <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> friends, entered Lennox, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> took up his quarters on <strong>the</strong><br />

confines <strong>of</strong> Luss's territory, where lie expected, by <strong>the</strong> mediation <strong>of</strong> his<br />

friends, to bring matters to <strong>an</strong> amicable adjustment. As <strong>the</strong> laird <strong>of</strong><br />

Luss was suspicious <strong>of</strong> Macgregor's real intentions, he assembled all his<br />

vassals, <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> Buch<strong>an</strong><strong>an</strong>s <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, to <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> 300 horse,<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> 500 foot, <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> design, if <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> meeting should<br />

not turn out to his expectations <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> wishes, to cut <strong>of</strong>f Macgregor <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong><br />

his party. But Macgregor, <strong>an</strong>ticipating his intention, was upon his<br />

guard, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>, by his precautions, defeated <strong>the</strong> design upon him. A con<br />

ference was held for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> terminating all differences ; but <strong>the</strong><br />

meeting broke up <strong>with</strong>out <strong>an</strong>y adjustinont ;<br />
