sions where they describe the program to parents and students. FCE’s Executive Director Anna Waring<br />
explained that due to the rigor and demands <strong>of</strong> the program, which, among other things, requires<br />
monthly meetings <strong>for</strong> parents and students, they lose a number <strong>of</strong> people after the in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />
sessions. However, the students in the program understand and accept the requirements,<br />
thus FCE has low program attrition rates. Beginning with last year’s freshman class, FCE aim is to<br />
enroll 18-20 students into their entering 9th grade class and graduate the same number <strong>of</strong> students<br />
four years later.<br />
Program Components<br />
Foundation <strong>for</strong> a College Education recognizes that getting into college is only the first step and additional<br />
support throughout college years is needed. There<strong>for</strong>e, FCE continues to support students<br />
to ensure that they graduate with a bachelor’s degree or higher. FCE delivers services to students<br />
through three major program components: College Bound, College <strong>Success</strong>, and College Scholarship<br />
Program.<br />
College Bound<br />
FCE’s College Bound Program is the academic and college planning component <strong>of</strong> FCE and supports<br />
students and families in grades 9 through 12. With students, the College Bound program aims<br />
to raise their expectations and academic per<strong>for</strong>mance beyond grade-level requirements and prepare<br />
them <strong>for</strong> college preparatory courses, honors and advanced placement. In addition, the College<br />
Bound program seeks to help families learn to navigate the college admissions process and utilize the<br />
resources available at their schools. Some <strong>of</strong> the services <strong>of</strong>fered through College Bound are:<br />
Academic enrichment and support through one-on-one and group tutoring (includes<br />
academic advising, course selection advising, and study skills enhancement)<br />
College planning and counseling (includes college admissions planning and support, college<br />
application instruction and support, and PSAT/SAT preparation)<br />
Local and national college tours<br />
Mentoring and college coaching<br />
Financial aid and scholarship guidance/instruction<br />
Parent/guardian development and support<br />
Leadership development<br />
Career exploration<br />
College <strong>Success</strong><br />
FCE prides itself on providing services to students while they are enrolled in college. “Unlike many<br />
college access programs,” the organization’s website states, “[FCE] measures success against college<br />
completion rates, not simply college enrollment.” To support students after high school, FCE has<br />
developed a comprehensive college retention program with services such as:<br />
