Hispanic Youth Institute (HYI) represents an effective, datadriven<br />
program using proven practices and procedures to establish<br />
new program sites across the US. A standardized application<br />
process ensures the same types <strong>of</strong> data are collected<br />
<strong>for</strong> all students and permits assessment across program sites to<br />
evaluate the overall impact <strong>of</strong> the program nationally. Additionally,<br />
there is a standard curriculum <strong>for</strong> the primary component<br />
<strong>of</strong> the program – the summer kick-<strong>of</strong>f event, and a<br />
standardized data collection and analysis mechanism <strong>for</strong> assessing<br />
the effectiveness <strong>of</strong> the kick-<strong>of</strong>f. One aspect that HYI<br />
is wrestling with, however, is the ability to collect and analyze<br />
standard data across all program sites <strong>for</strong> the year-long component,<br />
which has considerable variation between sites.<br />
Program Overview<br />
To address the high school drop-out crisis and low college<br />
enrollment rates in the Latino community, the Hispanic College<br />
Fund created the Hispanic Youth Institute (HYI) to educate<br />
and motivate high school students to go to college, pursue<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional careers, and give back to their communities.<br />
The Hispanic Youth Institute is a national program operating<br />
in eight communities that aims to help students graduate<br />
from college, become pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, and give back to the<br />
community. The program kicks <strong>of</strong>f with a four-day, three-<br />
